Activité 2

A “unit of measurement” is what you use to measure something.

Standard units of measurement include cm, mm, m, km, inches, ft, lbs, grams, cups etc. They are more widely recognized and can measure different attributes of an object such as weight, size or volume.

Non-standard units of measurement can be anything you use to compare measurement.  In le petit livre La taille des animaux, they used popsicle sticks les bâtonnets and paperclips les trombones to compare the size of the animals.

Les mots clés

  • longueur/Length: how long something is.
  • largeur/Width: how wide something is
  • hauteur/Height: how tall something is
  1. Choose 5 objects to measure. Measure the length/longueur of each object using a different unit of measurement. This is the longest side of the object. If you use a ruler you might measure in mm, cm or inches. You can also choose a non-standard unit of measurement like a paperclip to measure your item. You can complete your work on the worksheet. Activité 3

Complete worksheets using a ruler. Look closely at the units. Make sure to start at zero and  measure in a straight line. When measuring an item you must always include a number and the unit (cm, paperclip, km, Celsius, tsp). Why do we have to always  include the units (cm, paperclips, cups, teaspoons)?
