I would love to hear what you think about this. We will be holding another class meeting video chat on Friday May 1, 2020 at 10am. We will be using the same link that we used last week. Hello Everyone,

It was so nice to see most of your faces and to hear how you are doing. I just wanted to remind everyone about the Pro D Day on Monday April 27, 2020 and to wish you all a wonderful long weekend. Since most families were able to participate in our virtual class meeting this Friday, I am thinking about keeping it on the same day and time moving forward. If you have any conflicts or concerns please send me an email and I will see what the majority of families say. I would also love feedback on how the first meeting went? It seems there was a bit of technical difficulties at the end with showing just one student's screen, but I am curious if there were any other problems. I will try my best to figure them out.

Warmest regards,

Ms. Diep

If anyone would like some ideas for music activities or projects, Ms. Fletcher has a music blog that she would love to share. Please feel free to explore her blog at  sd41blogs.ca/fletcherp

A friendly reminder that Monday April 27, 2020 is a professional development day so there will be no activities posted as teachers will be attending online workshops.

Activity 26 Litterbug Art

Today is Earth day! To get us thinking about what we can do for our planet and to get us started on the topic begin with the read aloud posted below.

Listen to the story Why Should I Recycle by Jen Green. Think about materials that you can recycle from the story. Are they similar to materials you recycle at home? Think about how you sort your garbage at home and at school? Where does the garbage go?

With some recycling you have at home, re-use some materials and create your own litter bugs. An example is below. Please post your litter bug to FreshGrade.

Activity 27 Earth Day Write

Please pick one of the following options to write about then post it on Freshgrade

Option 1:

  • Think about all the things you love about the Earth
  • Think about ways that you can help the Earth stay healthy
  • Think about the things that you already do to help the Earth
  • Think about why it’s important to recycle

Option 2:

  • Listen to the read aloud Picture the Sky by Barbara Reid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zT1zEkFE5Mk
  • Go outside and look up at the sky
  • Enjoy the fresh air and appreciate how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place
  • Pick one cloud that you like or that makes you think of something and take a picture of it
  • Write about what you saw and some of the things people can do to make sure that the Earth is always protected and clean

April 20, 2020

Dear Families of Division 10,

Our first online class meeting will be on Friday April 24, 2020 at 10:00 am. We will be using Zoom to connect and a link will be sent out via email to all parents to access the video conference. Students will be able to see each other, if you or your child is uncomfortable with the video conference you may either turn off your camera or choose not to participate. We will start with a sharing circle where students will check in by sharing how they are feeling then we will end with a story. This will be  a short video conference as this is new for most of us. If all goes well and students as well as parents are onboard we can try to do a weekly video conference. If your child is unable to participate that is okay, this is not mandatory, but rather an opportunity for peers to connect. Please email me an RSVP if your child can participate or if you have any questions or concerns.

Here are some things to keep in mind during our video conference.

  1. Be kind and respectful
  2. Be mindful of how long your turn is - we want to make sure everyone gets a chance to share
  3. Keep your sound on "mute" until it is your turn. This will help with the sound quality so we can all hear the speaker properly
  4. Please consider your background and any information you will be displaying such as personal information or photographs
  5. Please do not record or capture any part of the video conference
  6. Be aware of who will be captured in view of the web camera and what can be overheard on the microphone
  7. This is a school activity and you should be dresses appropriately
  8. We will limit everyone to share one thing first before offering an opportunity for another share

Activity 21 2D/ 3D Shapes Art

  • Brainstorm some ideas that you would like to draw or create with shapes
  • Think about the steps needed and how you would use the shapes to create your art
  • For my example, I created a robot by cutting out different shapes with construction paper (I used a square for the head and body, circles for the eyes and ears, rectangles for the arms and legs), then I needed to think about what shapes would go on top of the others, once I decided how I wanted it to look and where the pieces should be placed, I glued them down
  • A photo of my art is attached as an idea
  • Be as creative as you like and when you are done please post a photo of the finished piece
  • Shapes Art Example

Activity 22 Edit the Sentences

  • Please pick any two of the sheets and make the corrections to each of the sentences on those pages
  • The focus is on capitalization, punctuation, finger spaces, printing when rewriting the sentences
  • Please post a photo of the completed work
  • Fix It Up Sentences

Activity 17 Keep a journal

  • We are all currently a part of a living history. Our children are all a part of this, and it will be talked about for generations to come. Schools are closed; sports are cancelled and people are social distancing on a global level. Have your child keep a journal over the next while documenting their experiences. This can be handwritten, typed, shown in photographs, drawings, in a video journal, etc. In their journal record events, day to day activities, feelings, and thoughts. As family members, let them interview you, be a part of it. When it’s all over save it in a safe place, that way they can share it with their children and grandchildren. Help them create a tangible, primary source of their own history.
  • Every once in a while I will ask that a journal entry be posted on Freshgrade
  • This would be a great opportunity to talk about different types of writing that there are and why we write
  • You can also discuss the writing process and revising vs. editing
