Week 8

Math Activity #8: Large number addition review

2. Complete the accompanying activity. Here are the instructions in English: “Move the balls to the left to make the number indicated at the bottom of the page. Click “varifier” to see if it is the same number. How many groups of 10 are there in the number? How many ones? How many more balls are needed to make 100?

Please write some equations to go with each question you answer.

4. Practice some addition equations to 100. Here is a worksheet you can use or you can write your own. Don’t forget to use your strategies:

  • Grouping 10’s and 1’s separately
  • Using visuals/manipulatives
  • Lining up and “carrying over” 
  • Using a number line

***Grade 1’s please complete a minimum of 5 questions from the above worksheet

(Optional): Play Race to 100

Take turns rolling a die or drawing a card. Move forward as many spaces as the number you rolled/drew. Keep adding and moving forward until one person reaches 100!

Pick one of the main characters from the book. Your character has gone missing. Your task is to create a missing persons poster. Please include a drawing and description of the missing character. Pick two adjectives that describe your character (generous, kind, greedy, mean, funny, lazy, etc.) and use examples from the text that show that your character fits the adjectives that you have chosen to describe them.

Feel free to use the graphic organiser to help you organise your ideas.

Activity #8: Cloud watching

Go outside and find a quiet sit spot to cloud watch. Look for shapes in the clouds.What do you see? Can you draw some clouds? Can you draw some of the things you see inside the clouds? What colours are there? Try going out on different days and compare your drawings/paintings.

Week 7

Math Activities #7: Large number Review 

1. Join us Tuesday May 26th at 10:30 am for Snack and Story. We will be reading the story “Counting on Frank”. 

2. Come up with 5 big numbers and what they mean.

Example from the story: The average ballpoint pen draws a line 2060 meters

Ex2: It takes 11 hours and 45 minutes to fill the bathroom with water

3. Estimation: Come up with at least one “how many” Math questions that you can answer. Before checking your answer, make an estimation or guess.

Example: How many times in a day does the refrigerator door get opened? (Tape a piece of paper to your fridge door. Write your estimation/prediction and tally every time someone opens it).

Ex2: How many  pieces of Lego will fit into a mason jar? Write down your prediction, fill up a jar with Lego, then count!

4. Tell me everything you know about the number 86! Record your answer in writing, drawings, equations, audio, video or whatever mixed media you choose. Think back to all of the things we talked about in class. Here are some things to consider:

  • What does 86 look like?
  • Combien de dizaine et d’unités?
  • write an equation
  • what could 46 mean?
  • C’est presque…

**Grade 1 students may choose to share everything they know about the number 36

  1. Vocabulary practice: Create a “tongue-twister” using the sound “ch” in a sentence (in French) as many times as possible. Remember that your sentence can be silly, but needs to make sense grammatically. You may use some of the vocabulary words but try to come up with some of your own “ch” words to add.

4. Le point d’exclamation et les bandes dessinés:

Le point d’exclamation (!) se place à la fin d’une phrase exprimant beaucoup d’émotion (la surprise, la colère, la peur, la joie, la frustration) Faites une bande déssinée avec les phrases d’exclamation. Ensuite pratiquez à dire ces phrases avec émotion.

Exclamative sentences express strong feelings and end with an exclamation mark (!) An exclamative sentence is used to show fear, surprise, anger, frustration, joy etc.  Create a cartoon using exclamative sentences, then practice saying the sentences with expression. Please send me your work. If you practice saying them, you can send me a video of you acting them out.

3. Covid19 Time Capsule

COVID-19 has given us the rare gift of time. It has given us a time to pause, time for us to reconnect with the earth and our families. This time capsule allows your child to reflect on how they are feeling during these times. They will also have a chance to document what is important to them at this time.
