Our theme for third term is non-fiction reading and writing. The Big Ideas from the B.C. curriculum for grade 1 are:

  • Our ability to communicate in a new language improves as we take risks in that language. 
  • Readers must not only decode words, but also understand the meaning of a text.
  • Texts follow specific structures, depending on their type.

And grade 2:

  • The task and its context determine the strategies of comprehension and expression that are chosen.
  • Awareness of other cultures helps us discover our own culture and build our own identity.

Our focus will be on reading strategies and comprehension, capitalization and punctuation, structure of informational texts and accurate spelling through our Dictée Program. 

At the end of each week I am asking you to send me an e-mail with the following: a vocabulary assignment, dictée, writing assignment and sometimes a reading assignment (this will be specified on the “Week” tab). You may send these to me as you complete them or wait until the end of the week to send everything in the same document/e-mail. You may wish to send a picture of your child’s work or a PDF/Word Document.

Each week we will have a sign up for conferencing. Conferencing styles will vary from one on one to small group meetings using the program Zoom. This is a time for us to practice conversing in French, share our feelings, ask clarifying questions about the homework and provide small group instruction. There will be a schedule signup week to week where you can select a time that is convenient for your child to video chat with myself and their peers.
