What We’ve Been Up To! (January 9th 2023)

Happy New Year Division 15 families!

I’m sorry to the parents who anticipate my blog posts! I try to upload at least every two weeks, however, as many of our activities are routine, I don’t want to flood your inboxes with the same materials.

Welcome to 2023! Here is an activity we did to supplement our discussion of the New Year.

**Writing**

Last week we practiced writing! This was a big challenge for all of us, but I was amazed at how well the students were able to sound out their words!

In Kindergarten, we do not emphasize spelling words correctly. We want to focus on phonological awareness. This is to encourage children to sound out words when reading and writing independently. For example, the word “DANCE” may be spelled: D-A-N-S. I will often use an alphabet chart to help students identify a letter they are trying to sound out. Feel free to print out a chart from the link below or let me know and I will be happy to make you a copy!

Here is our Hibernation billboard! We created a bear hibernating in it’s den and completed a writing prompt: “Bears hibernate during the winter. During the winter I like to….”

Here are examples from Manuela and Meghan.

“Snowball fight” -> S-N-O B-A-L F-I-T. “Make snowmen” -> M-A-K S-N-O-M-E-N

These are perfect examples of what I like to call “Kiddie Writing”! For home practice, you can present a “Consonant-Vowel-Consonant” (CVC) word, such as DOG, and ask them to sound it out to identify the letters.

Alphabet Poems

We also completed the last letter of our alphabet poems: Q! I will be sending the booklets home ASAP. Due to the high number of absences last term, their booklets may have incomplete pages. I highly encourage parents to go over the booklet so that they all have a complete book! Even simply going over one letter at bedtime can make a huge difference.

Warm regards,

Ms. Elhalhuli
