A Look Into What We’ve Been Doing So Far!

Hi families!

These are just a few of the things our class have been up to!

Intro to Routines:

One routine we have in class is Calendar. We do calendar everyday to get our kids familiar with months, days of the week, and the weather. We do morning messages where I will omit a letter of one word. For example: “_uddies”, instead of “buddies”. As a class, we sound out the word and figure out which letter belongs there! One student then comes up and writes in the missing letter. We also sing our weather song and fill in our daily weather graph. A great and easy way to introduce the students to data and graphing.

Miss Spider’s Tea Party:

Most of first term is spent doing SEL (social and emotional learning). One activity we did was read the book: Miss Spider’s Tea Party. It teaches us not to judge others before we get to know them and to spread kindness! We then painted foam balls and inserted pipe cleaners to create spiders for our classroom.

Big Buddies:

Every Wednesday our class connects with Ms. Hoang’s class (Grade 5/6) for “buddy time”. During Buddies, our little buddies and our big buddies will read, draw, exercise, and play together. This is a great opportunity for our little ones to connect with an older student and for our grade 5/6’s to practice their leadership skills.

Alphabet: Another Routine!

To introduce the alphabet to the kids, we are doing alphabet poems! We try to do 2 letters every week. This week we are exploring the letters C and K.

The Pumpkin Life Cycle:

To introduce science, we explored pumpkins for Fall! First we discussed, “What do we know about pumpkins?”. Then we asked ourselves, “What questions do we have?”. We then cut open a pumpkin to see what was inside. We then learned and created the life cycle of a pumpkin!

Diwali

On October 24th, we talked about Diwali and the celebration of lights. A big thank you to Srinithya’s family for sharing their family photos with the class! The class learned about how Diwali is celebrated in India and that many friends in our school celebrate Diwali. We worked with water colours to paint our own Diya’s.

Math: Patterning

For math we have been working on patterning! To begin patterns, we start with “AB” patterns. AB patterns are an alternation of two different elements (ex. colours, shapes, etc). An example of an “AB” pattern can be: Triangle, Circle, Triangle, Circle… or Blue, Green, Blue, Green, Blue, Green… To extend in the future, we will continue onto ABB, AAB, ABC, ABCD (challenge) patterns. We are working on observing patterns in nature, art, etc. as well!
