What We’ve Been Up To! (Math Ver.)

Hello Division 15 families,

I first want to say thank you to all the families that participated in the Student Led Conferences. I am so proud of the students and how they lead their families around the classroom. These conferences are a great way for students to demonstrate their learning directly to their families. Many of the stations during the conference are routines we do daily.

I realised it has been awhile since I have last updated the families on what we have been doing in math. During the conference we got to see the use of a ten-frame. These frames are used to develop number sense with the numbers 5 and 10.

Subitizing: We also use these frames to subitize! When we subitize, it means we are identifying a number without counting. For example, if we see a 10-frame and it is half full, we should know it is 5 automatically. And if you see a hand with one finger down… it must be 4. I am so impressed with how quickly all the students have started to subitize!

We also love this Subitizing Rock video that you can practice at home: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ib5Gf3GIzAg&ab_channel=JackHartmannKidsMusicChannel

Estimation: We have been having a lot of fun with estimation (a smart guess). To practice estimation, we put loose parts (ex. marbles) in a jar. Sometimes we will have reference jars (ex. a jar with 5 marbles and a jar with 20 marbles) to help students make an informed estimation. In the example below, we would know the answer should be between 100 – 400 (In K we would use much smaller numbers).

In our student leds, we had a jar of marbles for families to make an estimation. The number of marbles in the jar was 31. There were many smart guesses. Averie and her family made the closest estimation with an estimate of 29! Great job!

Thanks,

Ms. E
