All About Butterflies! (May 17, 2023)

Division 15 had a very eventful past few weeks!

As you may know already, Mother Nature gifted us some lively caterpillars on Earth Day. We were so lucky to observe the caterpillars form a chrysalis and eventually metamorphize into beautiful butterflies! We compared photos of different species of butterflies and determined that our butterflies were Painted Lady Butterflies.

Life Cycle:

We learned about the life cycle of a butterfly by making a life cycle out of pasta and learning a new song.

First there was a butterfly who laid an egg,

Out came a caterpillar with many legs,

Oh! See the caterpillar spin and spin,

A little chrysalis to sleep in

Then from the chrysalis,

My oh my!

Out comes a pretty butterfly!

Body Parts: We also learned a song for parts of a butterfly! Parts of a Butterfly - YouTube

Eyes, and wings, antenna, and proboscis

Symmetry and Haida Art Shapes:

Lastly, we learned about First Nations art shapes such as: Ovoid, Trigon, and U-Shapes. We then created beautiful butterflies using traditional Haida colours and shapes. While creating our patterns, we learned about symmetry and how butterflies (as well as many other things in nature) are symmetrical!
