Our Public Library

“By reading with your child, you also help cultivate a lasting love of reading. Reading for pleasure can help prevent conditions such as stress, depression and dementia.” (University of Liverpool)

I know our Community Libraries are closed to the public, but they are still offering the following services:

Get a library card over the phone: Call  604-436-5400 Monday to Friday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. No ID needed.

Get information by phone or email: Want to know how to borrow e-books? What community help is available? Where to learn about something? Call the library at 604-436-5400 or email eref@bpl.bc.ca.

The library has English books you can borrow from home and read on a screen, including picture books that are perfect for Kindergarten kids and audio books the whole family can enjoy.

April…

It’s hard to believe, but it is already the last day of April!!  And what a beautiful day out there today–makes me want to throw aside my plans and get out there and explore nature–or at least go for a walk.  You might feel the same way–I encourage you to take advantage of this time we have with our families and get out there together.

This week for nature school you were asked to head outside and look👀 for as many different birds as you could find.  Maybe you didn’t have a chance to do it yet–today is a great day to try it!  Take a sketch book (or piece of paper) and a pencil, and see how many you can draw–or take photos of…🤳

Or think of your own idea…that’s how Ms. McKenna and I get a lot of our nature school ideas–from you!!!  You are so very clever… 😉

Not everyone is able to head into nature–sometimes where we live makes that hard–so you can check out these webcams to see a few birds in their natural habitat. 🌍

Nature is beautiful–enjoy it!

Boggle Word Work

A new game for Word Work!

How to Play:

  • Players sit around the table so that all players can see the Boggle grid.
  • Each player will need a pencil and paper (or recording sheet).
  • Each player searches the assortment of letters for words of three letters or more. When a player finds a word, he/she writes it down.
  • Words are formed using any letters (you may use magnet letters to help you move them around to create words or copy the letters onto pieces of paper).
  • No letter cube, however, may be used more than once within a single word. (for example: Board #1 has only 1 letter ‘a’, but 2 letter ‘d’s’–so you could spell “Dad”.)

Super Challenge: Words are formed from adjoining letters. Letters must join in the proper sequence to spell a word. They may join horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, to the left, right, or up-and-down.

Watch next week for a new set of letters…

Challenge Of The Week

I hope you had fun with the Mystery Box Challenge last week.  I’m sure you thought of some creative clues for your family to guess your mystery box item.

This week I have something new for you…  This new challenge will also require your creative and critical thinking skills–but in a different way.

Have you ever wanted to be a spy?

Send top secret coded messages?

This week’s Games & Choices Challenge allows you to do that.  I know most of you have Lego at home, so my challenge to you is this:

  • Create a Lego Alphabet code key–using a different Lego piece for each letter (if you don’t have Lego you can draw a  code using different shapes/pictures for each letter)
  • Use your code key to create a secret message
  • Take a photo of your message and code key and send it to me

Here’s my code key and message…Can you solve it?

Happy spying!

Mystery Box

I know that we’ve been at home for a long time now, and some of you might be feeling a little stir crazy.  It’s getting  harder to find things to occupy our time…

I know in class we have the lots of friends and activities to keep us occupied, but for right now we need to be more creative…which made me think about the Core Competencies and how they can be applied at home…

Critical & Creative Thinking Challenge:

  1. Watch this video with Kermit and Cookie Monster
  2. Build/decorate your own mystery box  (be  creative)
  3. Place an item in your box.
  4. Create 2-4 clues to help your family guess what is inside. (be a critical thinker–choose your clues carefully)
  5. Play the Mystery Box Game–maybe you can even give out cookies for correct guesses!!!

Enjoy!!

Rainy Days

I guess we had a great run of sunny weather–but today that ends.  😢  Perhaps it’s fitting on Earth Day  🌍 to give the Earth a good long drink.  I know this will help our flowers, grass and trees grow!

☔ With rainy days comes a new problem…finding things to do inside to keep us busy.  Remember we have a lot of fun learning activities planned in our lesson plans, but sometimes you need something different…

In our classroom, play is an important part of our day. It is one of the main ways that children learn about the world around them and explore many of the big ideas we learn about in our schooling.

So if you are hearing “I’m Bored…” you can check out these ideas:

Have a great day…
