What We’ve Been Up To! (Nov 14-17)

Hello families! Here’s some of the things we’ve been up to this week (plus a little from last week).

Language Arts:

We learned the letters Dd and Gg this week.

We also completed a “Write the Room” activity that was sent home yesterday. Students explored the room looking for vocabulary related to Remembrance Day and peace. They were asked to only write the first letter of the word. Those who wish to extend could write more than the first letter… or even the whole word! I was very impressed with how many students wanted to challenge themselves and write as much as they could 🙂 Excellent job everyone!

Educational shows for home:

A great YouTube series is Captain Seasalt and the ABC pirates. These mini episodes are a great way to supplement learning the alphabet and phonics:

Numeracy:

We finally made it to 3 element patterns (ABC). This cold and flu season has definitely impacted the pace we are moving as a class, but we’re powering through! Here is Zayna’s ABC pattern. She chose three different colours and circled the “core” of the pattern (the section that gets repeated) well done!

Here is one of our math stations that we have in the classroom:

Students roll a die and cover the corresponding number on the apple using small cotton balls. This also helps with fine motor skills 🙂 Here, Srinithya is extending this activity by using two dice, adding the numbers, and then covering the sum.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Ms. Hutchinson visited our class and introduced us to Puppy and Snail from the SecondStep program. The Puppy and Snail puppet help students visualize problem solving, identifying their emotions, and how to regulate their feelings (among others).

Here is a video from SecondStep showing how we use Puppy and Snail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFfqQY9uZno

Students learned “I” statements: “I don’t like it when you __________” + “It makes me feel ________” + “Can you please stop?”.

Ex. I don’t like it when you push me, it makes me feel mad.

We had students roleplay scenarios and practice using these statements. We continue working on having students transfer these skills into their daily interactions during recess and exploration time.

Art

We created suncatcher poppies using ModPodge and crepe paper for Remembrance Day. We quickly went over transparent, translucent, and opaque materials. It was a great way to get us curious about material properties and how we use them in art! (and again, fine motor skills!)

Have a happy rest of your week and have a lovely weekend,

Ms. Elhalhuli
