What we’ve been up to this week! (October 31-November 4)

Hello families,

Here are some of the highlights from this week!

Literacy:

This week we explored the letters “E” and “H”. We examined our friends’ names to see who had an E or an H in their name. We listened to some letter songs and read out our letter poems.

Our ELL teacher also came in to do a whole class lesson on pronouns, which the children loved! We went over: She, He, and They.

We also started our journaling! A future goal is for the students to be able to label their journals. Ex. writing a “C” or “K” next to their drawing of a car. This is a way the students can demonstrate their knowledge of the alphabet and phonics. Moreover, I trying to move the students away from scribbling and stick figures and more on focusing on details in their drawings. Here is example for the prompt: “What I like to do” and some of the work from the students.

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Day is around the corner (Friday, November 11th – NO SCHOOL). To introduce Remembrance Day, we read the book “A Poppy is to Remember”. We then created egg carton poppies to decorate our class wreath that will be presented during our Remembrance Day assembly on Thursday, November 10th. We then talked about “Peace”. The students learned a song with our music teacher, Ms. Raap, that the whole school will all perform during the assembly:

Grow, grow, grow

Grow little poppy grow

On the field of war

Grow little poppy grow.

Peace, peace, peace,

Ring the bells for peace

Poppies show we remember

  Those who died for peace.

Check out some of the loose part poppies they made during exploration time!

The 5 Senses

We talked about the 5 senses: Touch, Sight, Taste, Hearing, and Smell. Introducing the senses is important as we will eventually go on sensory walks and talk about our senses along with a concept: Ex. What does peace look like? What does peace feel like? Here’s a page from The Peace Book by Todd Parr that we read together.

Math: Pattern Books

We are creating individual pattern books! These pattern books are a great way for them to visualize a pattern (ex. AB, AAB, ABC) and use them as a reference for other activities!

Have a fun and relaxing weekend!

  • Hello Ms. E
Thanks a lot for the wonderful class activities. I saw kids and especially Noora’s work and her made poppy and it gave me a very nice feeling. I talked her about the senses and she explained me all perfectly. She sang the poppy song by heart. Noora loves the class activities and I appreciate.
