Fun December Friday!

What a fun day!

We started with a wet walk for the Jingle Bell walk. It was amazing to see what our community can do. The gym was so busy and the community room was full of donations!

Our class did their part in collecting items and bringing it back to school and after that warmed up with some hot chocolate and cookies.

In the afternoon, we had so much fun skating! It was the first time on the ice for some students and they had a great attitude trying something new! Everyone had fun and many want to go skating again!

Here are some pictures from today:

Alpha leadership visit

Today, some Alpha Secondary students came to our class as part of their “walk and lead” leadership program.

They planned and lead a STEM activity and students created “Mr. Motion” out of paper. They played Simon Says with Mr. Motion and then did buddy reading with the big buddies.

It was so fun to have so many extra guests in our class! Leadership will be coming back to do a Science activity with us on January 7th.

Here are some pictures from today.

Peace is…

We read another Todd Parr book, “The Peace Book” to start a conversation about what is peaceful to you as we approach Remembrance Day. Students’ illustrations were shared at the assembly and some shared their ideas.

Below are the responses and beautiful illustrations from our class in the style of Todd Parr.

Literacy stations

You might wonder what happens during literacy stations. We do them 3 times a week and it usually starts with a phonics lesson at the carpet. Then students go off to do different activities.

Kindergarten students right now are working on the letters of the alphabet (both upper and lower case) through a variety of hands on games and on fine motor skills such as making straight and curvy lines and printing upper and lower case letters.

Grade 1 students are working on their spelling packages that have a variety of activities with 5 sight words. When finished with those, they can play different hands on games that reinforce the sight words as well as games with a focus on phonics.

Below are some pictures of some of the activities students work on during literacy stations.

Weather β˜οΈβ˜€οΈπŸŒ€οΈπŸŒ§οΈβ„οΈπŸ’¨πŸŒˆβš‘οΈ

We have been talking about different types of weather in Science. We talked about what clues we see in the sky and around us that helps us know what the weather is like that day.

After listening to a song about the weather and seeing non-fiction images about each type of weather, students drew what they learned about it. We have some pretty amazing artists and here are some samples of today’s work.

Art workshop

Today our class did an art workshop with Arts Umbrella and it was fantastic! They brought posters with images to inspire students and did a quick demonstration of how to sketch and colour sea creatures with oil pastels.
Students had about one hour to create their art pieces.

Here are some photos from the workshop and art work was sent home today.

Story workshop in the library

You may have heard that we go to the library on Mondays for story workshop with Ms. Papapanagiotou. What does that look like?

We work with loose parts to inspire our imagination. We have talked about who can be in a story and today we talked about creating the place where a story can happen. In partners or small groups, students agreed on a place and then used the loose parts to create it. At then end, we went around to all groups and they shared their story settings. We had a castle, a house, a beach, a forest, a houe on a mountain and a couple of hounted houses for Halloween.

Part of the Kindergarten and Grade 1 curriculum is creating and sharing stories orally. We will be focusing on the oral language component before moving onto writing stories.

Here are some pictures from the creating and sharing process from today.

Fall leaves πŸ‚ πŸπŸƒ

Today we went outside to observe, investigate and collect fall leaves. We read a non-fiction book about fall and why trees lose their leaves. We looked at the trees, we saw all the leaves collecting around the playground area and each student brought back to class two different leaves. We then compared the leaves and talked about what we noticed. We sorted the leaves by colour and then put them in order from smallest to biggest. Check out some pictures below.

*We were inspired by the picture book “The Leaf Thief”. Ask your child who is the leaf thief!
