Butterfly life cycle

We have been observing the caterpillars form a chrysalis and then emerge as butterflies.

We learned about the different body parts of caterpillars and students were especially curious about the caterpillars’ prolegs (fake legs!). They only have 6 real legs.

We watched the caterpillars hang upside down in a J shape and form their chrysalis. Then, patiently waited for butterflies to emerge!

We learned that our painted lady butterflies mimic the colours of monarch butterflies to keep predators away. We learned about their body parts, what they drink and the different ways they stay safe from predators in nature.

It has been so cool to watch them close. We will be releasing them next week.

Here are some pictures of all the work we have done around their life cycle in Science.

Lynn Canyon field trip

Our class had an amazing day at Lynn Canyon ecology center looking for water and land bugs, learning about what animals live in the forest and having fun exploring the ecology center.

Here are some highlights of the day.

Caterpillars 🐛

You may have heard we have caterpillars in our classroom! Students will be able to observe them closely as we learn about living things and their needs, animal features, and their life cycles in Science.

Yesterday they got transferred to their new home and they’re doing well exploring.

Today we watched an animated story based on Eric Carle’s book The Very Hungry Catterpillar.
