You can submit to me over Google Docs. Make sure at the start of your essay you have included on the document:

Your full name

Your class (English 12, Period __)

The date (November 16, 2018)

An original title

Please make sure you include a bibliography for your synthesis essay in MLA style. THIS LIST IS NOT IN MLA STYLE. You also need to include any additional research sources you used.

Cultural Orientations – Be able to define these orientations:

Bennett Scale – Be able to define these stages:

Denial, Polarization, Minimization, Acceptance, Adaptation

I will give you SCENARIOS and you will explain them using the culture orientations.

I will give you examples of PEOPLE and you will explain where they are on the Bennett scale. You could suggest things they could do to improve their cultural competency.

I will work through the essays in the order I receive them. Early submissions are welcome! I am hoping to get through everything by mid-day Saturday. You’ll receive comments as soon as I make them – your Google Docs may be set up to email you automatically when I add comments, but if not, you can go ahead and check by Saturday.

Final drafts are due on Friday November 16. You can also submit your final essay by Google Docs. I don’t need a paper copy.

Hello English 12,

Unfortunately, I’m not going to be teaching your Monday/Wednesday classes this week (but you will be in good hands). However, I am here and available outside of class time/via email all week. Here’s what will happen in my absence:

Monday – Period 3 will be in the library and Period 4 will be in computer lab B213. Depending on how much work you have already done, you may or may not be ready to start writing. Do NOT start writing without spending lots of time reading and re-reading your texts, taking notes, planning your question and area of focus, and outlining your essay. Ms Miller, your teacher today, is an English teacher and she can help you or check your work. And take advantage of your classmates who are further along in their understanding of the assignment!

Wednesday – You should be writing by now. Period 4 is in the computer lab again. Unfortunately, Period 3, I was not able to get you into the lab/library today. You can bring your own device to write with, draft on paper, or use the day as a study block to do homework for another class (meaning that you will have time to focus on your essay outside of school hours). A study block is NOT a free block – you need to make sure that those around you can work undistracted.

By Wednesday I will post info on how to share your Google Doc with me if that’s not something you know how to do. Remember, your best attempt needs to be in to me by Thursday midnight to get edits.

There is NOT a PDF of Theme for English B. It is easy to find online. Google it.

The date for Google Doc submission is Thursday November 8, midnight. This is a FIRM deadline. Anything I receive after this date will be marked as your final draft. First drafts do not need to be complete to receive feedback.

Hello English 12! Today we read Alice Munro’s wonderful story “An Ounce of Cure”. Your homework is to expand your writing about a mistake you’ve made, and what you’ve learned – to try out a narrative writing genre, where we express what happened to us and then reflect on what it meant. 

Your homework writing can be a first draft, maybe 0.5 pages-1 page long. We’ll be working more with it later on – it doesn’t need to be complete or perfect, it’s just something down on the page to begin with.
