End of September updates (all classes!)

Hi everyone,

It’s already the end of September (or only the end of September, depending on your perspective). The school year is fully underway – I’ve learned most of your names, seen a few pieces of your work, and am getting to know you all as students. I’m really enjoying the conversations we’ve been having this year – I am lucky to be working with such a thoughtful, well-informed, and kind group of students. Here’s a bit of an update of where we’re at.

English 10 New Media: This class is about to be taken over by Ms. Niemann, who is finishing her teacher training at UBC. Ms Neimann has a wonderful unit planned that will get you to investigate identity, through your own project work and a variety of texts.

English 12: Ms Niemann will also be taking over English 12 Period 2, for a unit that explores narrative and identity through a wide range of texts. She’ll be here until late November.

Period 3 and 4 will keep working with me. We’re going to continue looking at short texts, through the lens of identity. Next week we’ll do a couple of stories from Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried, one of my all-time favourite books.

Global and Intercultural Studies is beginning work on the project for the first phase of the class, Understanding Ourselves. The post below has project details. Once that’s done, we’ll Understand Others – easier said than done!

English 10 First Peoples – We’re continuing to deepen our understanding of the lives and experiences of Indigenous people, and will be applying our knowledge as we read some more texts in the months ahead.

Welcome

Welcome! This is a web space for Ms. Atkinson’s English classes at Burnaby South. Here you’ll find weekly overviews of our classwork, important files (projects/assignments), and links I want to point you towards.
