Physical Education

This term in PE class, students participated in a variety of team games and further developed their basketball skills. They practiced dribbling, passing and shooting and played a variety of modified basketball games. Students practiced strategies for offensive and defensive play. They continued to develop qualities if good sportsmanship and fair play.

PE

Students have been playing a lot of Ultimate, an exciting team sport played with a flying disc. Before playing the game. they learned and practiced the proper technique for making a backhand and forehand pass. They also practiced using the pancake method for catching the frisbee. Next, students learned and practiced defense by being a, “mark” and trying to block a pass.

One of the best aspects of ultimate is the, “Spirit of the Game”. There are no referees, so the players are responsible for following and enforcing the rules and the emphasis is always on fun ahead of winning. At the end of each game, we played a variety of activities emphasizing fair play, honesty and good fun. This has often been the most popular part of the PE class.

Nutrition

Students tracked their eating over the course of a week and then used what they learned from Canada’s Food Guide to make individual nutrition goals. They also learned about the function and food sources of essential macro-nutrients. They are currently working on nutrition raps as a fun way to present their understanding.

Basketball

Students had a lot of fun developing their basketball skills while playing a variety of games in the gym. They also developed great hand-eye coordination, warming up their hands doing slaps, taps and wraps. They practiced shooting during games like Around the World and Thing One, Thing Two. Dribbling, using dominant and non-dominant hands, improved during games such as Sharks and Minnows and Home Run.

Mood Meter

This term, we have been talking about all the different kinds of feelings we experience. It helps us to understand ourselves and others when we can be very specific when naming an emotion. Using the mood meter, we learned that emotions can be located in four quadrants. The horizontal axis indicates the degree of pleasantness we are feeling. Some emotions are unpleasant, like fear, anger and sadness, while others are pleasant, like joy, optimism and calmness. Some emotions are high energy like panic and motivated, while others are low energy like despair and relaxed.

Although all emotions are important and necessary, sometimes we need to use self-regulation skills to move from one emotion to another. We can regulate our emotions using our thoughts and at other times we can use actions. We practiced several strategies such as taking deep breaths, thinking of our favourite place, going for a walk, listening to music, dancing… Students chose strategies for each quadrant of the mood meter and are using these strategies to independently manage their emotions.
