Community Learning Task 5

Learning Activity #5: May 1st – May 7th

Celebrating Families

“When someone with the authority of a teacher, say, describes the world and you are not in it, there is a moment of psychic disequilibrium, as if you looked in the mirror and saw nothing.” — Adrienne Rich

As we start the month of May, we acknowledge that Mother’s Day is fast approaching. This week’s learning activity is to reflect on our own unique families and to celebrate the important people in our lives.

Tasks:

  1. Read one or both of the following books about families
  • A Family is a Family is a Family— This book can also be found on EPIC Books. If you don’t already have an EPIC account, you can request one from your teacher

  • -Who is in a family?
  • -What do family members give or share with each other?
  • -What responsibilities do family members have?
  • -Do you see a family that looks like yours?
  • -Do you see families that are like a friend’s family?
  • -Do you see families that are different from yours?
  • -Why is it important to learn about families different from yours?
  1. Look at your family.  What is it about your family you are grateful for?  What makes your family special to you?
  1. Create a poster of your family with the title “A Family is a Family is a Family
  • Draw the members of your family on your poster. It’s your choice who you’d like to include – you can include just the people who live in your home, any extended family members, any pets you may have etc.
  • Label the members of your family who you’ve chosen to include
  • Add a short statement describing something that you’re grateful for, for each member of your family that you’ve included on your poster
  • As an optional final step, add a few lines on the back of your poster about why family is important to you or about what makes your family special
  1. As an optional last step, create a card or a coupon book to present to your mom or special person for Mother’s Day to show them some of the ways in which you’re grateful for them.
