Community Learning Task #8 – The Core Competencies

Learning Activity #8 – May 22nd – May 29th

Core Competencies

As part of the term 3 report card, all students must complete a self-assessment on our six core competencies:

  • Communication
  • Critical thinking
  • Creative thinking
  • Personal awareness & responsibility
  • Positive personal & cultural identity
  • Social awareness & responsibility.

This self-assessment gives your child an opportunity to discuss these 6 vital elements with a caring adult in order to then self-evaluate and reflect on their own learning and developmental journey.  It is a major part of learning and we hope that ALL students have an opportunity to complete the attached survey found in this lesson plan.

The readings for this week are important as they give descriptions and examples of all the core competencies through the eyes of Eagle.  Eagle comes to understand all these elements as lessons through the wind and the cedar trees.  They describe the importance of 6 animals: wolf, raven, salmon, bear, beaver and orca.

Tasks: To provide some insight into the core competencies

  1. Read: The Six Cedar Trees. A read aloud of the book can be found

And

Animal Descriptions Pdf of the different animals and why they are important

  1. Read and Complete: Read the “Six Cedar Trees – Learner Statements” Six Cedar Trees – Learner Statements.  Have students colour the icon where they see themselves on the continuum.  It is important that each child understands these with a growth mindset.  Not yet is simply ‘not at this time’ or ‘I can work on it’.
  1. Discuss:
  • Which animal’s qualities do you connect with mostAre there qualities from multiple animals that you connected with?
  • Which of these qualities do you see in your family?
  • Discuss with your family how each statement in the “Six Cedar Trees – Learner Statements” relates to you
  1. Complete the On-line Core Competencies Self-Assessment. This is highly recommended as this self-assessment will be part of this term’s report card. Please be honest and thoughtful as you are completing this assessment.  This assesses your child’s journey throughout the year and not only for the time at home.  Keep in mind that everyone will have areas in which they feel most successful and areas in which they’d like to improve, and that’s okay!  With a growth mindset, we all succeed!

Optional, but encouraged, tasks:

  1. Choose the animal that you most connected with from The Six Cedar Trees bookand draw it’s picture.  Decorate and colour as you see fit.
