Reading

Here is a Book Report Template for those who are interested.  It can be used for books your child is reading.  They can complete this report to keep a log of books read during this time at home.  This does not need to be completed for ALL books.  I would suggest completing this once a week or more often if your child enjoys keeping track of books read.  Children who find this task onerous may become reluctant readers so use best judgement.  Everything in moderation.

Our classroom does have an Epic Books account.  Epic books is a website of online books both fiction and non-fiction at a variety of reading levels.  If you are interested in joining this site, please send me an email.

Kids A-Z reading program is meant for Ms Paulich and I to monitor your child’s reading as they move through leveled books.  We have selected a starting level for your child.  We have currently assigned 4 levels of books for each student.  Two below their current reading level to practice fluency and one above for a challenge.

Please remember this is not a Sprint.  If your child just races through the books, they will not internalize the skills needed to move to the next level.  A little practice each day is better than reading 10 books in one sitting. I would suggest reading 2-3 books per day (1-2 books for fluency: below reading level or familiar book read previously and one new book at own reading level).  Also, if your child reads a book at an acceptable rate, they will get more coins than if they just click through the pages to get to the end.

Comprehension matters!  It is very important for students to pay attention to the comprehension questions.  This program will let me know how many attempts your child will need in order to correctly answer the 10 comprehension questions.  Even if you child is decoding the books properly, they cannot change levels unless they are understanding what they are reading.

Each child will go through this program at different rates.  At some point, we will assign specific books for assessment purposes.  After an assessment, we will assign new levels and different books will be added to their reading room.  It is important to note that this program is meant to be used to develop your child’s reading skills.  It is not the only reading they should be doing.  Your child should continue to read their favourite books from home daily as well.

Please have your child listen to the story AND read the story prior to taking the quiz.

Please let Ms Paulich or myself know if you have any questions.

Thank you.
