Remote Learning During Covid-19

Homework Due

hi 🙂

Remote Learning occurs when the learner and instructor, or sources of information, are separated by time and distance and therefore cannot meet in a traditional classroom setting. Information is typically transmitted via technology (email, discussion boards, video conference, audio bridge) so that no physical presence in the classroom is required.

Life looks different for all of us at the moment, and so does your child’s learning experience. The resources [we are working on for the next two weeks] are not intended to be a direct replacement for regular in-class instruction – rather they are designed to be flexible and supportive for families.

During these extraordinary times, your child is unlikely to spend the same number of hours a day on their continued learning as they spent at school.

Please know that everything we are creating is with a view to providing a sense of connection, normalcy, and routine that keeps your child engaged in their own education. We will continue to support families in the very best way we can.

EXCERPT FROM Burnaby schools superintendent

What am I supposed to do?

Do these 4 things…

(Let’s call it the Fab Four)

1. Check your Office365 every school morning b4 10am

Every morning, I post messages on Teams.  It’s like our class whiteboard.

2.  Turn In Your Assignments

Learn how by watching my screen recording…

video (6:09)

Short form: go to Teams, then look for the backpack called Assignments

3.  Make Yourself a School Day Plan

Example school day:

  • start by logging into Office365/Teams/read Smith’s morning messages in Teams
  • clock in your attendance daily (sometime between 9:30 and 10am)
  • Zoom live classroom meeting 10am daily
  • IXL Math = 30 minutes daily (work from A to Z)
  • IXL English = finish the assigned week by Friday 3pm
  • PE = 30 to 60 minutes daily
  • Reading = 60 minutes [e.g. epic!, ReadTheory, independent novel reading]
  • Scholastic = 45 to 60 minutes daily [Current Affairs/Socials/Sci/Health/Career/SEL]

NEWS and Gallery Walk

log into Office365/Teams/channel NEWS and Gallery Walk

When students share their work with an authentic audience, they experience positive peer pressure. They want to create something that people will enjoy.

A classroom filled with the work of children is a delight to be in and sends a message to students that their work and their learning are important.

Independent novel Reading

  • Read novels from the green list and earn at least 10 points per week.  For book list and assessment see their black duotang and our class website–subject– Reading.
  • Design your own quiz for the novel after you read it.  T or F, multiple choice.  Come up with 20 questions.  Remember to have the answers separately.  Type your own quiz using Office 365 and put your quiz in the Reading Folder to share with me.
  • I will try and learn how to create fillable pages online and then post it into your Reading folder on Office365.  You should have your Black duotang at home anyways.
  • You may read a novel not on the list since there is no paper quiz using my files at school. One teacher-mom recommends the novel Restart by Korman (a bully lost his memory).

click here for parent letter on how to log in (I signed my class up for a free 90 days trial for IXL).

IXL is a great website to help yourself learn, build, and grow your confidence in Math.

I suggest working independently and going at your own pace, starting from the beginning of GRADE 6.   If it is too difficult, go backwards to an earlier grade.  It is important to know the basics before you can move ahead a grade.  Behave as if this is our daily math practice with the blue sheets.

How will I know you have done it? I can track you! So can your parent(s).

Enjoy…it looks like fun!

100:  How does the IXL SmartScore 100 work?  click here

80 is good, 90 is considered excellent, and 100 is mastered.

I suggest aiming for mastery before going onto the next skill.

RE:  proper hygiene.  I would recommend choosing one of the sections (big or small), and making a poster!  Share your poster on Office 365 Science Folder.  Poster can be done by hand (take a pic).  Or poster can be created digitally.  Do not find a poster online and pretend you made it yourself.

ZOOM
  • The B.C. government has paid to get a Canadian license for Zoom, an increasingly popular video-conferencing tool, to support virtual learning for students in kindergarten through Grade 12 during the COVID-19 outbreak.
  • The ministry said teachers should be getting a set of instructions and access to Zoom through their school districts this month.
  • read the news about Zoom
Fri April 24! We have now tried Zoom. Most of our class preferred Zoom, including myself.
Here’s why…
  • there is a waiting room prior to the meeting
  • there is a “raise my hand” feature
  • I can see my students’s names and their chat at the same time
  • 19 students found their way in (lots)
  • it felt relaxing
  • everyone could be heard easily and clearly
  • I can make up a poll during the meeting and have them answer (they get to see the poll results)
  • the chat can be private (a question only teacher can see), or a question for everyone to seeOur morning circle question today was, “One thing I have learned from this covid-19 experience is…”.
Yesterday was, “What is one thing you like and dislike about remote learning?”  That question got lots of reaction.
We will use Zoom.
