Animal Habitat Dioramas

Students began by looking through science books and thinking about what sort of animal they were interested in studying.  They then looked at the sort of habitat in which their chosen animal would survive.

Students created their animal out of plasticine of various colours, due to our supply, and then learned how to meld the correct colour of plasticine as a coating on top.  They used photos of their animals as their models.  They did a great job!

The inside of the shoe boxes were painted to represent the parts of their habitat (sky, grass, jungle, desert, etc.).  Students decided what they needed to complete their habitats.  I got various supplies for them (coloured papers, coloured plasticine, liquid glue, hot glue gun) and they collected natural materials (sticks, stones, sand).

I enjoyed watching their creations develop.  They are now completed and on display along the window ledge in the Library.  You can see them there if you are attending the Volunteer Tea tomorrow afternoon.  I have taken pictures of each which are below.

The Jolly Postman

As a wrap-up to our fairy tale unit, we have been enjoying two books by Janet and Allan Ahlberg.  The first one is pictured above – The Jolly Postman or Other People’s Letters.  The second one is the sequel – The Jolly Pocket Postman – pictured below.

We then created our own versions of these books.  Our booklets have two envelope pages.  One page contains a postcard to her stepmother from Cinderella  while the other contains a jigsaw puzzle of the Three Little Pigs sent by the Big Bad Wolf.  All these things were created by the students.  These are hanging on the bulletin board at the back of our classroom.

Mittens with our Buddies

We did this activity over two weeks.  The first week students created patterns on their mittens.  The second week they glued them onto blue construction paper and did a winter scene around it.  These are in the hallway by the Office.  Some are from our class and some are our buddies’ mittens.  Other of our mittens are in the hallway by Mrs. Branco’s room.

We are thankful for … and some turkeys🦃

We met with our Buddy classes – Divisions 1 and 3 – last week and made feathers on which we wrote our names.  Our big buddies then helped us to write a thing we are thankful for on the feather.  We then decorated the feathers.  These are on the bulletin boards in the hallway outside of our classroom. We will be doing a variety of activities with our buddies as we will be meeting each Tuesday morning for a half hour.

These feathers are joined by the turkeys they made in class.  These were done with pencil crayons and tissue paper.  Students also practised their cutting out skills.  Gobble, gobble.
