Art Program

Elements of Art

Over the course of the school year students will be undergoing a comprehensive study of the elements of Art.  Wherever possible our Art will be integrated into other curricular areas (math, science, and language arts).

Our first Art lessons will focus on making a personal Art Portfolio which will hold the majority of the students’ work this year.  This will be sent home at the end of June.  Larger items will be sent home as completed.

Students will have instruction in the 6 elements of Art – colour, value, texture, shape, line, and form.  These will be explored in further depth as the year progresses.  A first activity often includes crayon rubbings of leaves which incorporates all of these elements.

003

We will be exploring all of the elements of Art.  I will be regularly posting samples of the students’ artwork – check out the posts on these lessons.

Directed Drawing

Students will also be learning drawing techniques through teacher-directed lessons.  These drawings will be kept in a separate ‘drawing portfolio’ – also to be sent home at the end of the school year.

We will begin with the features on the human face and focus on proportion and realism.  Future lessons will expand on this beginning learning – for ‘realistic’ features – and will also include cartoon drawing for different character expressions / emotions.

To get the students comfortable with their developing drawing skills we will begin with lessons where the students draw simple animals – pets and wild ones.  Samples of these drawings will be posted when completed.

Art Vocabulary

Students will be learning a variety of new terms over the course of the year.  To help with their learning and understanding I will be posting these words (and their definitions) for you as well.  Please feel free to contact me if you need further clarification of anything.
