The Jolly Postman

As a wrap-up to our fairy tale unit, we have been enjoying two books by Janet and Allan Ahlberg.  The first one is pictured above – The Jolly Postman or Other People’s Letters.  The second one is the sequel – The Jolly Pocket Postman – pictured below.

We then created our own versions of these books.  Our booklets have two envelope pages.  One page contains a postcard to her stepmother from Cinderella  while the other contains a jigsaw puzzle of the Three Little Pigs sent by the Big Bad Wolf.  All these things were created by the students.  These are hanging on the bulletin board at the back of our classroom.

Jolly Phonics

We have completed our second week of Jolly Phonics lessons.  Last week we did the letters s, a, t, and i.  This week we did p, n, c/k, and e.  We have a lesson on most days.  The blue duotangs are sent home each Friday with the pages of the letters learned that week.  Thank you for helping your child with their practice on the weekends.  Please remember to send the duotangs back to school after the weekend.

Fin’s Friends

This is a programme from the Vancouver Canucks organization which focusses on personality traits involved with social and emotional learning.  We will be doing several lessons over the course of the school year.  We began our lessons by discussion some personality traits such as: kindness; friendliness; and perseverance. We read a book called, “I Like Me”, which is about a chubby pig who likes herself for being just the way she is – whether she is on her own or with others.  Students then thought about things that they like about themselves – things they are good at doing, how they treat others, etc.

They then created wishing well art pieces with their written statement about themselves incorporated into the art.

I look forward to many more lessons over the school year.

The Lorax

We have wrapped up our Seuss unit with reading and having a class discussion on The Lorax.  Some students were aware of the story from the movie version.  After our discussion the students brainstormed things that the Lorax would say to the Once-ler if he were given the chance.

Students then chose one of these sentences – or created their own – and wrote it on a Truffula tree.  These were then decorated, cut out, and are posted on the bulletin board above their ‘What’s Happening in Whoville’ designs.

All in all, I think that the students have enjoyed our time with Dr. Seuss.  There are a few more books that I will read (tomorrow or early next week) as a final goodbye.

If I Ran the Zoo – Seuss

We enjoyed the book, “If I Ran the Zoo”, which is about a young boy who finds the typical animals in the zoo just a little too boring for him.  He uses his imagination and creates a variety of very Seuss-like animals for his zoo – if he was to have one of his own.

Students made flip books which had 6 typical animal pages and 2 pages where they could create their own outlandish animals.  Some students were very innovative with the animals they produced.

These books are pinned to the small bulletin board outside of our hallway door.  Check them out if you get by the school!
