Bernard, the Butterfly, and some cousins

We have been learning about colour theory through exploring how the primary colours (red, blue, and yellow) are used to make the secondary colours (orange, green, and purple – with equal amounts of the primary colours), and intermediate colours (orange, green, and purple – with unequal amounts of the primary colours).

Students used tempera paint (the three primary colours only) and put blobs of paint onto one side of their folded paper.  They then folded the paper closed and rubbed it together to share the paint on both sides.  The goal was to give their butterflies a symmetrical look.  They were encouraged to put two primary colours together to create intermediate colours.  It is difficult to create secondary colours without measuring the paint.

Today students created construction paper bodies, with antennae, and put them together.  They are in the bulletin board in the hallway. They look great!
