Colour Theory Trees

We have been learning about colour theory in art with Ms. Mudry. Among other concepts, students learned that some colours are warm and some are cool. The warm colours are colours like red, orange and yellow and some of the cool colours are blue, green and purple. They were then given the opportunity to practice this theory by creating their own tree art.

First making a grid with a circle in the centre, students drew a tree trunk with branches reaching up and out to the edge of the circle. They used their understanding of line to create designs on the trunk and branches. Finally, they had to decide where to fill in the cool and warm colours.  Warm colours inside the circle made it look like the sun, while cooler colours looked more like a moon. The contrasting effect came from colouring the outside of the circle using the opposite colour choice. Students proudly shared their tree art at our virtual Hallowe’en assembly.

Gemstones found in British Columbia

Recently, our study of natural resources  in British Columbia led us to looking at specific types of rocks and minerals. We then began investigating some of the gemstones that are found in our province. Each student spent some time researching a specific gemstone and creating a one page visual. Using maps of British Columbia, they found the location of  the gemstone deposits. Then, they found an interesting fact about their gemstone and drew an illustration of it in either its raw or refined form. These pages have been sent to MineralsEd where some may be chosen to appear in next years’ calendar.

Lost in the Backyard

As Flynn spends more and more time lost in the wilderness behind Joe and Ellen’s house, he begins to realize that his survival depends on finding solutions to the problems he encounters. This city boy is starting to think more like his outdoorsy sister. What problems is Flynn encountering in the woods? What is he doing to try to solve these problems? What other survival techniques could Flynn use? How has shifting from a fixed-mindset to a growth-mindset improved Flynn’s chances of surviving and being rescued?

Still Life Drawing and Painting

A still life is a collection of non-moving objects, like flowers or food, that you can use as a subject for a drawing or painting.  Your task is to draw the still life using objects in your home as the subject. Remember to pay attention to the shapes and shadows.

Fractions

This week we took a close look at fractions. First, we used different models to help us understand the concept of equivalent fractions. Then, we moved to using number lines to show fractions and whole numbers as fractions.

Next week, I will challenge you to use what you have learned about fractions to solve our first Problem of the Week.

Lost in the Backyard- 4&5

We have already finished reading the first five chapters of our new novel! I wonder what will happen to Flynn, now that he is off the grid with his parents at Joe and Ellen’s rustic house. For a city-boy who doesn’t like being outside, Flynn is definitely out of his element.

What do you think will happen next? Sometimes authors use a  technique called foreshadowing to  give the reader a hint about where the story might be going. Can you find any examples of where Alison Hughes may be using foreshadowing to help us make predictions?

Lost in the Backyard – Chapter 1

I hope you all have enjoyed the introduction to Lost in the Backyard. After our class meeting tomorrow, I will be assigning a written summary of this chapter. Remember that your summary must be written in paragraph form. Like all paragraphs it needs to:

  • begin with an introductory sentence
  • include 3-4 details
  • end with a concluding sentence

The “details” in your summary should include who the main characters are, where the story takes place and what is happening. Please limit  your summaries to 5-6 sentences.
