Space

This term has been all about Space and our interconnection to the vastness of the universe. Students explored a variety of topics including meteors and asteroids, the Sun, lifecycle of stars, constellations, our galaxy and the observable universe.

Additionally, we participated in NASA’s Mission to Mars Student Challenge. Students were able to design, build, launch, and land a mission on Mars, just like NASA scientists and engineers.  Finally, on February 18, we all watched in wonder as the Perseverance rover successfully landed on Mars!

 

Lit Circles

 

This term, students were able to choose a book to read from a selection of mystery novels. Each week, they responded to the section of the novel they had read by completing a different role sheet and sharing it with their group. This led to focused, in depth conversations about their novel and allowed them to express their understanding in a variety of ways. For example, they could choose to take on such roles as illustrator, word wizard, literary luminary, connector, travel tracer and many others. It was exciting to sit in on group discussions where students shared their work and asked each other questions to deepen their understanding.

 

 

Est-ce que tu aimes…?

In French this term we continued to expand our vocabulary, learning words and expressions for activities we can do with our family.

Students learned to ask each other what they liked to do with their family. For example – Est-ce que to aimes manger le souper en famille?  They also learned to respond accordingy – Oui, j’aime manger le souper en famille. 

Grade 6 Math with Ms. Bauer

This term, students have used reasoning, patterns, and logic to explore, analyze, and apply mathematical ideas. Students looked at the place value of decimal numbers, compared decimals,and used various strategies (such as regrouping and the box method) to do operations with decimals (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).  Students have also been learning that fractions and decimals can be represented in parts and wholes and have been looking at the relationship between mixed numbers and improper fractions.  

Number the Stars

Students have just finished reading the historical fiction novel, Number the Stars. This novel is about two families living in Denmark during the German occupation of WWII. Annemarie’s best friend, Ellen and her family are Jewish and need to escape Denmark to avoid persecution. Will Annemarie and her family be able to get them to Sweden before it’s too late?

The guiding questions students considered while reading the novel were:

  • What is personal freedom and why is it important in your life? Why is it essential to protect the freedom of others even if your own is not threatened?
  • How did WWII affect the lives of those who lived through it? What lessons can people today take from that historical event?

Français

In French this term, we reviewed numbers to 50, months and days of the week, colours and some simple conversational expressions. Students are able to understand and respond to phrases like:

Comment t’appelles tu?                        Je m’appelle________.

Comment ça va?                     Ca va bien…mal…comme ci comme ça.

Quelle est la date aujourd’hui?             La date est…

Quel âge as tu?                                    J’ai ______ ans.

Now, we are learning vocabulary and expressions to talk about family members, activities and celebrations. Students have shared their family portraits on their blogfolios.

Math Term I

This term, the grade 5 math students have focused on two of the Big Ideas in the curriculum: Identifying regularities in number patterns that can be expressed in tables, and computational fluency and flexibility with numbers that extend to operations with larger (multi-digit) numbers. Additionally, students further developed their basic math fluency skills by practicing basic addition, subtraction and multiplication facts.

At the beginning of the term, students learned to identify number patterns and write pattern rules. After that they were able to develop expressions using a variable to describe a pattern. Finally, students used patterns to write and solve one-step equations with a variable and could express a given problem as an equation, using symbols (e.g., 4 + X = 15).

Later in the term, they worked with whole numbers to 1 000 000 and used different strategies like front-end rounding, compatible numbers, benchmarks and compensation to estimate sums and differences. Finally, they used these strategies to solve problems in real-life contexts and problem-based situations.

Erika’s Story and Naomi’s Tree

                                     

In Social Studies and Language Arts this term we have been looking at injustices faced by different minority groups, mostly during the period around World War II. Students completed inquiry projects, researching questions they had about the war. Some of these questions were: Why did Japan attack Pearl Harbor? How did different countries communicate during the war? Why did Hitler want to take over Europe? Which countries were occupied and how did the war end?

Students read two picture books, Erika’s Story and Naomi’s Tree and identified similarities and differences in the experiences of the young girls in each story. Both of these books are true stories of the lives of the protagonists, one in Germany and one in Vancouver, during the war.

The comparisons made in these stories led us to look more locally at Canada’s historic treatment of different minority groups and examples of past discriminatory government policies and actions. We have specifically been learning about British Columbia’s treatment of Japanese Canadians during World War II.

 

 

Mood Meter

This term, we have been talking about all the different kinds of feelings we experience. It helps us to understand ourselves and others when we can be very specific when naming an emotion. Using the mood meter, we learned that emotions can be located in four quadrants. The horizontal axis indicates the degree of pleasantness we are feeling. Some emotions are unpleasant, like fear, anger and sadness, while others are pleasant, like joy, optimism and calmness. Some emotions are high energy like panic and motivated, while others are low energy like despair and relaxed.

Although all emotions are important and necessary, sometimes we need to use self-regulation skills to move from one emotion to another. We can regulate our emotions using our thoughts and at other times we can use actions. We practiced several strategies such as taking deep breaths, thinking of our favourite place, going for a walk, listening to music, dancing… Students chose strategies for each quadrant of the mood meter and are using these strategies to independently manage their emotions.

Colour Theory Trees

We have been learning about colour theory in art with Ms. Mudry. Among other concepts, students learned that some colours are warm and some are cool. The warm colours are colours like red, orange and yellow and some of the cool colours are blue, green and purple. They were then given the opportunity to practice this theory by creating their own tree art.

First making a grid with a circle in the centre, students drew a tree trunk with branches reaching up and out to the edge of the circle. They used their understanding of line to create designs on the trunk and branches. Finally, they had to decide where to fill in the cool and warm colours.  Warm colours inside the circle made it look like the sun, while cooler colours looked more like a moon. The contrasting effect came from colouring the outside of the circle using the opposite colour choice. Students proudly shared their tree art at our virtual Hallowe’en assembly.
