From Mr. Cohen:

Beginning Band Overview

Term 1

In the first term students have been learning the following skills:

  • Proper posture, hand position and embouchure
  • Correct assembly and care of their instrument
  • Correct sound production
  • Note reading and playing of several pitches; whole, half, quarter and eighth notes and corresponding rests
  • Reading and understanding musical terminology and symbols
  • Playing an instrument as part of a group
  • Following a conductor
  • Ear training and pitch recognition

Evaluation is based on daily participation, arriving with all necessary equipment (instrument with accessories i.e. mouthpiece, method book, sheet music, and pencil), preparation, following classroom expectations, performance playing tests and written work.

Ways to support student learning:

  • Ensure your child has their instrument/method book/music stand etc. on band days
  • Provide a quiet place to practice
  • Set a regular practice time (15-20 minutes a day, 4-5 times per week)
  • Invite your child to play an exercise or song from their method book for you, or have them perform their part from the sheet music we are working on.

Musically yours,

Ian Cohen
