First Nations Music in Canada

Box Drum

We will be exploring musical instruments of the Coast Salish peoples, focusing on the box drum, an instrument unique to the Pacific Northwest. We will develop our understanding of musical life of the Coast Salish peoples and how the box drum came to be. Our virtual exploration will include the following: a trip to the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona; a visit with artist John Livingston; and a look through a musical instrument picture gallery. Some questions for you to answer will be posted in Teams.
