Music Autobiographies

What is a song that is special to you and your family? Students reveal that music is connected to beautiful memories of family, culture, special occasions, performances, road trips, and fun times. How many of these songs do you recognize? Which ones are new to you? The music autobiographies are compiled below for you to peruse and maybe learn something new about one another through these stories from our Twelfth Avenue community.

Listening Program & Zentangle-Inspired Art

Imagine the afternoon bell has just rung. We’re all gathering back in our classrooms and settling in for the Listening Program announcement. “Good afternoon.  This week’s listening selection is …”

While learning from home, you’ll decide which Listening Program selection you would like to listen to this week. Choose one from any of the selections on the Listening Program page. Maybe it’ll be Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” or perhaps Maurice Ravel’s “Bolero”. There are so many worthwhile musical selections to choose from. Read the information that goes along with the music.

Settle in … this process needs time. It’s important that you be relaxed and focussed during the process of creating a Zentangle. Plan on listening to the piece several times. (You’d typically hear the same piece five times during the week at school.) As you listen, you are invited to create a Zentangle – an unplanned and abstract piece of art.

There are some guidelines for making a Zentangle.

  • Use a 10 cm squared paper and a fine-tipped black Sharpie (or anything you have to draw with).
  • Draw a free-flowing line that starts in one spot and loops its way around the square to create spaces in which to draw your patterns.
  • Fill in the spaces with simple, repeating patterns (called tangles).

Allow the music to inspire your art. How might your tangle patterns reflect what you hear in the music? How might the the overall mood of the music be reflected in your art? Is the music angry or tender, happy or sad, carefree or serious, etc?

Label your Zentangle with the title and composer of the piece that you chose for listening. Write a few sentences explaining how the music might have inspired your Zentangle. Can you find any connections between the music and your art? I look forward to seeing your work and will celebrate it by posting it on the blog.

Here are some examples of patterns.

A Zentangle-Inspired Art Gallery

The student responses to the assignment are as varied and unique as those who created them. Many have explored ideas – music and otherwise – through listening, thinking, and drawing. All together, the works are a delightful representation of our Twelfth Avenue community of learners.

Hand Washing Presentations

Monday, April 20, 2020 (Divs 1-4)

We are going to create a video with a montage of photos submitted by you! It’s going to be kind of like a PBS presentation for the school community to remind everyone about the importance of hand washing especially during the outbreak of Covid19. Hand washing is one of the most important actions we can take to slow down the spread of this disease. It’s a behaviour we want to reinforce. Check out the assignment in Teams for instructions.
