Our Plasticine Paintings 2022

VIDEO ~ Making Plasticine Pictures with Barbara Reid

Barbara illustrates all her books with plasticine.

Hello,

Plasticine paintings are incredible and so fun to look at, not to mention inspiring.

Plasticine (also called modelling clay) works especially well for kids because it’s a forgiving medium. You don’t have to be great with fine motor skills or details.  It’s movable and moldable and kids are not intimidated by it!

Students were instructed to come up with a SPRING THEME.

How do you get these amazing results?

  • begin with the background
  • then add on top of it as the foreground
  • blend colours
  • add texture

  • 1.Tell me about the process of creating it: I started making the waterfall, adding white at the bottom to make it look better. At last, I made the tree and added details.
2.Does your final product accurately reflect your initial idea? Did this turn out like you imagined it would?:
It was a tiny bit different than my initial project, but it looks very similar.
3.In what ways were you frustrated with it?: On the ground, I regret on how I made the grass.

  • How did you plan this piece? I saw the picture Tyler was doing, then I asked “Where did you find that?”
He showed me and there were a lot of similar pictures.
If you could do this piece again, would you do anything differently? Why or why not?
Blend the colors better or greater, I personally think I blended very weird.
What can I or another viewer learn about you from looking at this piece?
Not really, I would just walk by while looking at the art. I wouldn’t go by and think this would make me learn anything new.

  • 1. I thought about what comes in Spring, then I recognized that cherry blossoms bloom during the time Spring arrives.

    2. First, I started making a sunset. Then I continued down until the b.g. (background) was done. Second, I used a tool to make the cherry blossoms blend in, then that was basically it.

  • 1. How did you plan this piece?
I searched up pictures online then found the picture I wanted.
    2. Tell me about the process of creating it?
I sketched the photo, then added plasticine, then started blending and adding texture.
    3. In what ways are you pleased with it?
I’m pleased with my background because it turned out well.

  • 1. How did you plan this piece?
At first I wanted to do a cherry blossom, then I saw a picture on google and put two and two together.
    2. Tell me about the process of creating it
There were two things I got scared of and they were using a lot of clay and if I had enough clay. Another one that scared me is if I had enough time to finish because I had a lot to do.

  • The process of creating my plasticine art was I needed to make the sky/background. I mixed black a blue to make this beautiful dark blue colour. I made a tree out of dark brown. I then made a dark-ish purple and gray for the cherry blossoms.

I was, and still am, frustrated because the purple and gray do not look so good with the night sky behind.

If I could change my art in any way, I would put less blossoms floating in the air and make the cherry blossom colours brighter.

  • I got my idea from google.
It took me three days to finish and my thumbs were in a lot of pain.
if I could go back and change something I would change the background.

  • 1. I planned on making this piece by watching videos before-hand about the technique on how to put the plasticine on the wood plank. I also watched videos on how to blend the plasticine and how to make small details.

    2. If you could do this piece again, would you do anything differently?
If I were to do anything differently, I would definitely change the colours on my sunset, since a couple people used the same ones.

  • 1.How did you plan this piece? I planned it by looking my images online.
2.Tell me about the process of creating it? It took me three days to do it and my thumb was in pain.
3.Does your final product accurately reflect your initial idea? Did this turn out like you imagined it would?
It turned out worse than I thought.

  • I made this piece by spreading different shade off blue darker to light. then when it got to a nice light shade of blue, I added white. After adding orange from light to dark, I made an island in the back ground to add volume to the piece. Overall i enjoyed making this piece very much. This would be a great project for the future students of this class!

  • List the three most significant things you’ve learned in doing this assignment:
    1. It is hard to make things with plasticine.
    2. Warm up the plasticine before using it.
    3. Don’t do too complex art.

In what ways are you pleased with it?
I didn’t mess up badly. Also, I am proud because I didn’t change my idea.

In what ways were you frustrated with it?
It was hard to make the grass. I had to make it different from how I wanted it to be.

  • 1. Does your final product accurately reflect your initial idea? Did this turn out like you imagined it would?
Yes and no. Most of the art was surprisingly successful and I definitely felt proud of myself because I am not particularly good at painting. Of course, sometimes it didn’t go as planned; but I pulled through.

    2. List three significant things you’ve learned in doing this assignment:
    a) It is great to take your time doing these things slowly. I took my time with this and in return, I was able to point out mistakes that I have made.
    b) I was able to smear the right amount of plasticine in the smallest of spaces, learning that I was able to do this.
    c) I was happy when I was able to carve out the shapes of what I wanted. This was also something I had learned that I can do.

    3. In what ways are you pleased with it?
I was pleased with how I was able to conserve a massive amount of plasticine while making this piece of art.

    4. In what ways were you frustrated with?
I was frustrated with how my plasticine kept sticking to my hand and not to the canvas. It was incredibly hard to smear the plasticine.

  • 1. How did you plan this piece?
When I thought of spring, I mainly thought of flowers. I was thinking of a painting I did and it included a flower field with a sunset. Since the plasticine could blend and it included flowers, I thought this was a good idea.

    2. If you could do this piece again, would you do anything differently? Why or why not?
I would’ve researched different simple clay flowers to make and research a lot more overall. The flowers were very time consuming and pretty repetitive and I would’ve liked more variety.

  • 1. How did you plan this piece?

I found a photo on google and I thought green was boring so I made it orange.

    2. Tell me about the process of creating it?

I sketched a tree, then made the sky, then MADE the tree then added clouds then the leaves.

    3. Does your final product accurately reflect your initial idea? Did this turn out like you imagined it would?

    Yes, just a little worse.

  • 1. How did your plan this piece?
When I thought of spring, I thought of lots of flowers and cherry blossoms so I thought of a nice flower field with some cherry blossoms. I originally thought of a nice clear sky with some cherry blossoms and some flowers under it, but I changed my plan and just went with a sunset with some cherry blossoms.
    2. If you can do this piece again, Would you do anything differently? Why or why not?
I would probably make my trees less like popsicles and add clouds to my background. But overall, I would have changed my sunset because many people used the same design.

  • 1. Tell me the process of making it?
first I sketched a picture I found online, then I mixed some colours and applied my plasticine on the wooden board from top to bottom.

    2. How did you plan this piece?
I searched up spring art ideas on the internet and found the one I thought would be good for my art project.

    3. In what ways are you frustrated with it?
My tree looks kind of messy and I forgot to add a black outline for my house

  • I like mine plasticine art but I made it up on the go as well because I messed up my plan

I also like it because my alternate plan was a mountain range and I like it

but what I don’t like is that I messed up and its not picture perfect or what I had in mind, well but it did work out and it was okay. but the next time I do it I know what I need to do, I need to plan what I do before hand and draw it out first.

  • 1. How did you plan this piece?
I ask my friend for the idea and I go online to see more ideas, and then i am thinking about the plan for my plasticine.
    2. If you could do this piece again, would you do anything differently? Why or why not?
I will do different ideas and I will plan to do different things on my plasticine. because this one I don’t have a lot of time to do it and i don’t have a lot of ideas to do this

  • 1. How did you plan this piece? With 2 lands or realities and one barrier blocking the 2 realities.

    2. Tell about the process of creating it? I had to spread out the plasticine with my fingers and switch the original idea which was a blue sky and flowers.

    3. Does your final product accurately reflect your initial idea? Did this turn out like you imagined it would? No, my original idea changed. My first idea was it make a blue blended background and a blended patch of flowers and grass.

  • How did you plan this piece? I drew a cottage and some plants.

Tell me about the process of creating it? I searched up a picture of a cottage and then just added some plants.

Does your final product accurately reflect your initial idea? Did this turn out like you like you imagined it would? My art didn’t go as planned.

  • I thought I was going to do bad but I pulled myself together.

Well at first I was going for a full ocean but then I changed it over and over again.

The colour is nice and the concept is cool. It’s very different from other art that someone would do in general.
