Term 1 Overview (September – November 2023)

Scope and sequence of the following learning objectives will be determined by the classroom teacher, based on meeting student learning needs.

Language Arts

Big Ideas:

Exploring stories and other texts helps us understand ourselves and make connections to others and to the world.

Using language in creative and playful ways helps us understand how language works.

Create and Communicate:

-personal Narrative Writing focusing on sentence structure, paragraph structure and adding details

 

Comprehend and Connect:

-picture-book read-alouds focusing on questioning, connecting, summarizing, visualizing and inferencing to deepen understanding of texts

Math

Big Ideas:

Regular changes in patterns can be identified and represented using tools and tables (grade 4).

Identified regularities in number patterns can be expressed in tables (grade 5).

Number Concepts:

-counting, multiples, flexible counting strategies

-comparing and ordering numbers

-estimating large quantities

-place value

 

Patterns:

-rules for increasing and decreasing patterns with words, numbers, symbols and variables

 

Addition and Subtraction:

-computational fluency of facts to 20

-estimating sums and differences of larger numbers

-using flexible computation strategies for larger numbers

-solving one-step addition and subtraction equations with an unknown variable

 

Measurement:

-telling time with digital and analog clocks

-12 and 24 hour time

-problem solving involving elapsed time

 

Science

Big Ideas:

Living things sense and respond to their environment.

Multicellular organisms have organ systems that enable them to survive and interact within their environment.

The Human Body and Senses:

-human senses and responses to the environment

-the basic structure and functions of human body systems (digestive, respiratory, circulatory)

-First People’s concepts of interconnectedness

Social Studies

Big Ideas:

Canada’s policies and treatment of minority peoples have negative and positive legacies.

Canadian Human Rights / Be a Changemaker:

-Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms

-human rights and responses to discrimination in Canadian society

-examples of individuals who have fought for change and spoken out against discrimination

-responses to racism and discrimination

Art

Big Ideas:

Creative expression is a means to explore and share one’s identity within a community.

Self-Portrait Art:

-explore identity, place, culture, and belonging through arts experiences

 

Metis Design Elements:

-traditional and contemporary Aboriginal arts and arts-making processes

Physical and Health Education

Big Ideas:

Daily participation in physical activity at moderate to vigorous intensity levels benefits all aspects of our well-being.

Understanding ourselves and the various aspects of health helps us develop a balanced lifestyle.

Physical Education:

-team sports, individual and small group activities

 

Health Education:

-practices that promote health and wellbeing including healthy eating and physical activity

-importance of sleep

-illness prevention strategies

Career Education

Big Ideas:

Exploring our strengths and abilities can help us identify our goals.

Good learning and work habits contribute to short- and long-term personal and career success.
