November Update

Hello everyone,

November is here, so its time for another monthly update!  At the bottom of this post you will find upcoming important dates for November.

Math

In October, students in division 3 were learning about patterns in Math.  We started by reviewing different types of repeating patterns, and moved on to increasing and decreasing patterns.  Students used classroom materials to build patterns, and used words and numbers to describe patterns.  We will be transferring those patterns into tables, and using patterns as a problem-solving strategy.

Canada’s Multicultural Heritage

In Social Studies, students have been learning about multiculturalism and their own family cultural heritage.  Thank you for your support with completing the parent interview.  We have also learned about the world’s continents, different countries, and different cultural celebrations.  At the end of this unit, each student will take home a book that documents their learning.

Outdoor Learning

This term, Ms. Kan’s class has joined with us in some Outdoor Learning activities.  We are fortunate to be able to walk to ‘The Forest’ a.k.a. the greenspace behind the school, and Byrne Creek from our school.  The focus of these activities has been developing positive connections to the local environment, making observations, and recording data, and sharing learning with others.  We are looking forward to continuing to develop this positive connection to nature.

Halloween

On Thursday, Oct. 31st staff and students celebrated Halloween!  Thank you to the Glenwood parent volunteers who helped us with this event by donating pumpkins to our ‘pumpkin patch’ in the gym.  Thank you as well to the Blue house team for bringing a variety of snacks and treats to share at our Halloween class celebration.

Coming soon…Young People’s Concert

Looking ahead to November, all students in grades 4-7 will attend their first field trip of the year, to a Young People’s Concert (YPC) at Michael J Fox Theatre.  This is an opportunity for intermediate students to access a variety of performing arts presentations.  The first YPC is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 26th.  Students will be leaving at 10:15 and are travelling by school bus.  During the concert, grade 4 students will be supervised by Mr. Choy and Ms. Woo while the grade 3 students will remain at school with me.
