Hello from Anita, our Early Childhood Community Consultant has more to share with you:

It’s hard to believe we are starting March already – that means spring is just around the corner! On your walk today, see if you can spy any bird’s nests in the trees – children are great at this game when they know what to look for – and see what they know about nests. When you get home invite your little one to build a nest for you to sit in together – pillows and blankets work well. If you’re feeling up to a bit of a messy activity and have some yarn and white glue, you can invite your little one to make a yarn nest! Check out the imaginationtree.com for the step by step instructions on how to create these messy and beautiful nests!

Mark your calendar for March 24th 1 – 2:30 for a very informative virtual Financial Empowerment Workshop. Reflect on the habits, beliefs and practices that lead our behaviour towards money. Learn about money management and practice using tools to plan and decide where your money goes. Check out the attached poster for more information or call 1 800 609 3202 or email moneynavigator@fsgv.ca  You can also visit vpl.ca/events  to register.

You won’t want to miss Burnaby Family Life’s Parenting Learning Event happening on every Thursday this March between 6:30 – 8! These are free to all families, caregivers and professionals in the field. Choose from The Power of Self-Compassion, Shifting Screen Habits, Nature…A Playground for all children and Belonging to the Village – or attend all four!!Check out the attachment for more information and registration or www.bflgrowscommunity.org/ple2021

If you are interested in a free one-on-one consultation about your child’s development, behavior, parenting tips, tricks and education please email or call me, Anita, to set up either a virtual appointment or a socially distanced visit in the community.

Make snack time fun and healthy today by making cereal snack necklaces. All you need is a healthy cereal with holes (Cheerios are perfect) and some kitchen grade string. Set up your little one at the table to thread Cheerios onto the string – they can munch and create necklaces for little snack later on. Easy and fun!

Painting on Ice

Invite your child to try painting on ice! Fill a plastic container with water and freeze overnight. Fill with water with at least 2 inches of water so children have time to paint and explore before it fully melts.  I took the ice out of the container and placed it in a tray with a folded paper towel underneath the ice to prevent it from slipping around.

Try painting with regular tempura paint or even food colouring.  Observe the difference between painting with tempura paint and food colouring.  Include different painting tools: paintbrush, sponge brush, toothbrush and an eye dropper for the food colouring.

Watch how the paint pools on the tray as it melts and takes the colour with it. See how the food colouring freezes as soon as it hits the ice. What happens if you add salt? How long will it take for the ice to melt? What new colours can we make? How does the ice feel? There are so many questions when exploring ice. If your child loses interest, leave the activity for a while. Let your child come back later to re-investigate what happens to the ice and paint. What happens if we put the rest of the ice in the sink under running water.

This is a messy exploration but a fun one that supports language development, science, fine motor skills and sensory play.

Who is ready to sing-a-long with me?  Over the winter-break, I remembered a very old song called, “We Built this City”. I first learned this song in my first year as an Early Childhood Educator, over 20 years ago!

Click HERE to sing with me.

We Built This City

We built this city, yes we did!

We built this city, yes we did!

We built this city, yes we did, all with human hands.

Black hands, white hands, yellow hands, brown.

All together we built this town.

Black hands, white hands, yellow hands, brown.

All together makes the world go around!

Dearest StrongStart Families,

This Holiday season will be different from previous years.  I will miss spending it with my friends and extended family. At the same time, I am grateful knowing that we are all keeping safe and healthy by celebrating with only those in our own households.  As exhausting as these safety guideline are, hold on for a while longer.  We can do this!  We can make new traditions and try new ways to make this season brighter.

As we say goodbye to 2020, I hope for all things filled with light and joy in the new year to come.  I sincerely wish you all a safe and healthy Holiday Season. I look forward to reconnecting with you all in the New Year.

With Love,

There was an old witch, sat stirring her pot.

Oooooh, oooooh, oooooh, oooooh.

Three little ghosts, asked, “What has she got?”

Oooooh, oooooh, oooooh, oooooh.

Tip toe, tip toe, tip toe………BOO!

I would also like to introduce you to Ashley Dunne from the Bob Prettie Metrotown Library.  Some of you may recognize her from her monthly visits to our StrongStart centre last year for our circle time.

The Burnaby Public Library is open and ready to help parents find the right books to read with their kids! We’ve missed talking to parents and helping them support their child’s early literacy skills. All four Burnaby Public Library locations are open 7 days a week, and there is always someone ready to help with whatever you need. Our services over the pandemic occasionally change, so the best place to check for our updated hours and services is https://www.bpl.bc.ca/news/covid19.

Parents who don’t feel comfortable spending time in the library can call us or use our website to put books on hold, so you only need to come in to pick up what we’ve put aside for you. We love getting questions from parents by phone (604-436-5400) and email, and we have lists of great books on our website as well (including a bunch of great ones for each age from 0 to 5). If you and your child don’t have your free library cards yet, just give us a call at 604-436-5400 and we can make one for you over the phone. We also have a new No Late Fees policy: we do not charge fines if you return items late anymore! We know busy families will drop off their books when they find time.

Even though we are not doing storytime programs right now, we can help you find free storytimes and other things to do with young ones in Burnaby this fall. We are here to support you and your little ones through this strange time. I hope you contact us soon!

I’ll sign off on this blog post with a recommendation for a fun story with lots of repetition about a cat who feels grumpy and learns to find the good in every day: Pete the Cat and his Magic Sunglasses. The story teaches kids how to change their mood if they don’t like how they are feeling, and the repetition is great for preparing your child to be a reader!

More recommendations and reading tips are just a call/email/library visit away 🙂

Burnaby is located on the ancestral and unceded homelands of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh speaking peoples, and we are grateful for the opportunity to provide library services to everyone on this territory.
