P.E. Challenge!

Tuesday, May 12th

Hi Division 8,

Silhouette, Dancing, Jumping, PeopleHope everyone practiced their dancing yesterday!  I can’t wait to dance with you on Friday.

For those of you who want another way to stay active, I have found the ultimate P.E. challenge!  I saw this on my friend’s blog at Brentwood Park Elementary and loved the idea. Check out this video that was created by a school in North Vancouver to get you moving inside the house!

Your job: Create a video of yourself doing some kind of physical challenge with a roll of toilet paper! You can copy something in the video but here’s a chance to let your creativity shine!  Here are some videotaping hints:

  • ensure there is enough lighting
  • film in landscape mode and NOT vertically if you are using your phone
  • keep the video to less than 10 seconds

Feel free to include any family members including pets! I’m going to be making a video with everyone’s ideas so please send it to me by the weekend. You can email it to me but if you remember, try and upload it into your OneDrive in Office 365!

Once you’re done here, head over to Microsoft Teams to complete your Math Measuring Rooms Challenge!

You have lots of fun activities today. Remember to set goals for yourself to help you balance your day!

Love,

Ms. Binng

Music Monday!

Monday, May 11th

Hi Division 8,

I hope you had a wonderful weekend celebrating all the special women in your life!

Crooner, Melody, Music, Singing, Sing Today is ‘Music Monday!’ Your first job is to go to Ms. Raap’s blog and complete the activity for Music.

We’ve been working a lot on staying mentally and physically healthy in the last few weeks. This week we are going to focus on JOY!

What brings you JOY?

Is it vanilla ice-cream? A bike ride? A warm hug from your family? Dancing – doing the butterfly?  There was a song that I heard last week that brought me joy…every time I hear the song I feel like dancing and I can’t help but smile! Please click on the link and listen to the song.

I want you to take a few minutes to think about what brings you joy. When you’ve got an idea in your mind, I want you to create it and then have someone take a photo of you and send it to Satpaul.Binng@burnabyschools.ca by Sunday, May 17th. I will be creating a video of our whole class so please make sure you send in your photos!

For example: You might send me a picture of you drawing, biking, playing video games, a family hug, listening to music…whatever it is that brings you happiness!

Now, I also mentioned at our last zoom meeting on Friday that we were going to be dancing today…

Boy, Dance, Music, Headset, HeadphoneDid you really think that because we were online we weren’t going to dance???

Once you’re done here, you’re challenge is to learn the dance a little bit each day. We are going to perform it on our class zoom meeting on FRIDAY!!! Head over to Microsoft teams for my dance video! The most important part is to have fun, get your body moving and celebrate the JOY around you!

Miss you lots!

Love,

Ms. Binng 🙂

Mother’s Day…shhhh!

Friday, May 8th

Dear Division 8,

It was amazing seeing your goals yesterday! I can’t wait to hear when you accomplish your goals!

The teachers at Morley also had a goal for this week. We made a video to share with you. Click on the video link below:

I hope you enjoyed watching the video…we all miss seeing you at school!

Did you notice the connection between all our work this week on being healthy and our video?!

On Sunday, May 10th, it is Mother’s Day! You can also celebrate a special aunt, grandmother or any special person on this day – YOUR CHOICE! I have 2 things that I would like you to do today.

  1. Remember the poems we did about nature that started with a letter???  I want you to write one for MOM!

For example:

M ost amazing hugs

O ut of this world jokes

M akes me the most delicious samosas

2. I want you to watch the YouTube video down below to make a special card for your special person! Please include the poem in your card!

If the card seems to hard, feel free to use your creativity to come up with your very own card! I know your moms will appreciate the thought!

Remember to give your cards on Sunday! Have a lovely weekend ahead!

Love,

Ms. Binng

Goal Setting

Thursday, May 7th

Hello Division 8!

I loved your curious minds and the way that you became scientists yesterday! It was lovely to see your amazing questions about the world around us! Thank you to John and Brandon who shared some beautiful pictures of their nature walk:

This week, we’ve been working a lot on how to stay healthy both in our body and minds. You’ve shared with each other lots of different ways to stay healthy physically by going on walks, running, playing in the backyard, dancing with GoNoodle and eating healthy foods. You’ve also shared a lot about how you take time for yourself and play legos, listen to music or read to stay relaxed in your minds.

Goal Setting, Goal, Dart, TargetToday we’re going to talk about your goals! A goal is something that you want to accomplish. Many of you had goals when we were at school to make new friends, learn a trick in soccer or learn typing! Now that we’re home our goals might have changed! Goals help us stay focused on something that we want to accomplish.  Sometimes we set our goal for the day, for the week or the future. In the comments section below, I want you to think of 3 goals…one goal for today, one goal for the week and one goal for the year. I also want you to think about how are you going to reach your goal?

For example: My goal for today is to make sure I go for a 30 minute run around the neighbourhood. My second goal is to make sure I talk or email my students each week. My last goal is to become a better baker by baking a new recipe each week!

Remember a goal is something that you can achieve in a certain amount of time. For example, Ms. Binng couldn’t become an astronaut in ONE day! I would have to be physically fit, go for years of training and then I might have the opportunity to become an astronaut!

When you’re done here, head over to Microsoft Teams for your Math video on Problem solving!

Have fun!

Love,
Ms. Binng

Nature Walk!

Wednesday, April 6th

Hi Division 8!

I love how many of you shared so many of your tips yesterday! I know we can learn so much from each other! Check out the stress balls that John made for himself yesterday:

Question Mark, Note, Duplicate, RequestFor today I’d like you to go on a Nature Walk as a ‘Scientist.’ Now a scientist is Hiking, Nature, Walking Trails, Jeanssomeone who is curious and asks lots of questions about the world around them. They search for questions and then think about all the possible answers to their questions.  Take a pencil and paper with you and sketchBee, Cartoon, Bumble, Honey, Icon, Buzz the things that interest you!

As you walk around your neighbourhood or forest, I want you to think of 3 Wonder Questions about the nature around you. Please write your questions in the comments section below!

For example, on my walk yesterday I asked:

  1. Why do butterflies have so many different colours on their wings?
  2. Why do clouds look like different things?
  3. Why are there so many ants under a log?

I would like you to pick one question and research it on the computer – Can you find the answer to one of your Doodle, Arrow, Show, Rise, Arrow, Arrowquestions? If you can please add that in the comments below too!

Enjoy your walk and happy wonderings! In case you would like to explore some more wonders, I’ve left the link to Wonderopolis under the links column!

Love,

Ms. Binng

How do YOU stay healthy?

Tuesday, May 5th

Hi Division 8!

Check out Aiden and Quinn’s healthy fruit light sabers from yesterday’s May the fourth activity:

How do YOU stay healthy at home?

Fruit, Fruits, Fruit Salad, Fresh, Bio           Cycling, Bicycle, Riding, Sport  Mental Health, Abstract, Anatomy, Art

When we’re at school your families pack you healthy food to eat, we go to gym to exercise and get our heart rates up and we use strategies to keep ourselves calm throughout the day.

During the corona-virus, it might be harder for some of us to talk with our friends, stay active and eat healthy Health Tips, Health Advice, Health Blogfoods. I’m wondering what are some of the strategies or activities that YOU do each day to keep your body and mind feeling healthy?  Please share 3 tips to stay physically and mentally healthy in the comments section below.

For example:  Each day I go for a walk during lunch, even in the rain. Sometimes I don’t feel like going but after my walk I always feel refreshed. Every week I also try to cook something new! When I’m baking in the kitchen I always feel calm and joyful…especially when I get to eat my baking!  I also try to text or call a friend or a family member each day to have different conversations from my family! My tips are for people to go outside every day in nature and go for a walk and make sure your having conversations with your favourite people!

I’ve left you a few fun DIY videos to make slime and stress balls! I chose these activities because I remember the smiles you had when you played with these in the classroom 🙂

Love,
Ms. Binng

May the fourth be with YOU!

Monday, May 4th

Hello Division 8,

Hope you had fun cooking this weekend! Looking at your pictures always makes me wish I could come to your house to eat 🙂 Thank you to the following students for sending in their delicious pictures of food: Quinn, Kary, Gabriel, Elynn, Elie, Diya, Dawson, Adeeb, Fariha and Aiden!

In the comments section, please let me know the following: What are the challenges of measuring when you are cooking? Is it hard to measure everything perfectly? If you add too much and change the measurements does that mess up your recipe or does it make it better? What do you love about cooking?

Crooner, Melody, Music, Singing, SingToday is also Music Monday! – Please look on Ms. Raap’s blog for her weekly music activity.

As today is May 4th – for my Star Wars fans – May the fourth be with you! I’ve left you a Youtube Star Wars making snacks video! It looked super fun and the light sabers looked pretty easy to make! Enjoy!

When you’re all done, head over to Microsoft Teams for your Math: Measure YOU video!

Love,

Ms. Binng

Cooking Week-end!

Friday, May 1st

Ingredients, Sugar, Flour, Ingredient

Dear Division 8,

Get your measuring tools ready because you will be cooking this week-end! I encourage all of you to be in charge of measuring all the ingredients. You are the CHEF! Get your measuring cups, tablespoons and teaspoons ready…please share with me what you are cooking this weekend down below! Your FOCUS when you are cooking should obviously be EATING but also think about what unit you are using to measure…millilitres, cups, ounces? Remember it’s different from cm!

Check out my Chocolate Cheescake Bundt cake from last week!

This definitely wasn’t a healthy choice but more of a family treat! Remember a healthy YOU is a balance of eating healthy foods most of the time with treats sometimes! This was our treat! Is your recipe a treat or a healthy choice? Let me know in the comments section below!

Ms. Raap has asked you to look at her Music Blog for this week! Please make sure you practice ‘Hymn to Freedom.’ There is a coast to coast sing-a-long on Monday at 9:30am! Prairie Dog, Singing, Musical Rodent

Get ready for your ZOOM meeting today at 11:00am. I can’t wait to see all of you and I can’t wait to see your cooking – yum yum!

By the way, thank you ALL for your wonderful drawing responses to the Earth poem and the Family Feet Challenge 🙂 I hope you had fun with your learning!

Love,

Ms. Binng

Family, Children, Father, Mother

In case you can’t hear the poem:

Mother Earth
She reminds me of my own Mother.
She has seen many battles and has endured
each and every one of them.
She has never stopped supporting me though.
She still continues to protect me and looks over me.
She gave me the tools I need to survive.
I return the favor by supporting Her, protecting Her, and
giving Her the tools she needs to survive.
Most of all I am grateful every day for the gifts my
Mother and Mother Earth has given me and continues
to give me each and every day.
~ Denise Mckay

Jack Prelutsky

Wednesday, April 29th

Dear Division 8,

Thank you so much for sharing your drawings and sculpting with me! I hope you enjoyed listening to Jack’s poem yesterday! Many of you got Jack’s funny sense of humour and made some personal connections to the dad that was snoring!! Thank you to the following students for sharing their drawings: Diya, John, Brandon, Gabriel, Quinn, Betu and Angelo

For today, I want you to click on the link below and read some of Jack Prelutsky’s poems. What is your favourite poem? Why did you like this poem? What lines did you like the most?  Please write it in the comments below.

http://jackprelutsky.com/jacks-poems/

For example: My favourite poem is ‘I Made a Noise this Morning.’ This poem made me laugh…I especially liked the lines ‘In a way, my brief eruption, Was a little work of art.’ I liked this part because it reminds me of my son’s works of art!!!

Happy reading!

When you’ve finished writing below, please go to Microsoft teams for your Math Tower Challenge! Child, Tower, Building Blocks, Blocks
