Jack Prelutsky – Poet of the Day!

Tuesday, April 28thNotebook, Address Book, Point, Sketch

Hello Division 8!

Today I’m sharing with you one of the funniest poets that I know…his name is Jack Prelutsky!

  1. Click on the link below and listen to me read aloud the poem, “Louder than a Clap of Thunder” by Jack Prelutsky.

What was your first reaction when you heard this poem? What was your favourite part? Did you like all the describing words he uses in the poem? Were you able to ‘picture the words’ (visualize) in your mind? Please write your comments below!

Jack uses LOTS of describing words in this poem! When you’re done, I want you to create what your mind imagined when you heard me read aloud the poem. Create one moment of the poem either by:

Snoqualmie, Falls, Waterfalls, Seattle

  1. Sculpting – use play-doh or any other 3-d object to make your sculpture
  2. Drawing – Get a piece of paper, markers, pencil crayons and draw ONE moment in the poem.

When you’re done, please take a picture and send it to me at Satpaul.Binng@burnabyschools.ca! Thank you! I can’t wait to see your creations!

Have fun creating today!

Love,

Ms. Binng

Ecosystems!

Monday, April 27th

Dear Division 8,

It’s PRO-D today! I hope you enjoy your day today!

Just before Spring Break we learned a little bit about biomes and ecosystems around the world. We learned how we Earth, Planet, Mother Earth, Ecologywere all connected to the environment and the impact we had on the world. I noticed that many of you mentioned how much you care for our Earth, on Earth day. You gave me many examples to follow such as turning off lights, turning off water and recycling to ensure the safety of our Earth.

Now that many people around the world are at home, a very interesting thing is happening to our Earth. I want you to watch the video below first.

In the comments section below, please explain what is happening to the Earth now? Do you think it’s a good thing or a bad thing? Please explain your answer with at least 1 detail.

Also, just a friendly reminder that this week I will be having zoom calls every day with 5 different students at 11:00am. I’ve sent the link to your parents. On Friday, we will have a zoom class meeting with everyone!

Elynn, Kary, Elie, Fariha and Diya – please remember to join the meeting at 11:00am today! I look forward to chatting with you.

Love,

Ms. Binng

Canadian poets!

Thursday, April 23rd

Hi Division 8!

I love that so many of you are reading the poems in Epic books!

Today I’m going to introduce you to some Canadian poets. The first poet is Robert Heidbreder – his poems are in your Epic books account called ‘Noisy Poems for a Busy Day.’  The second poet is Loris Lesynski and he has a wonderful poem titled, ‘Boy Soup.’ I’ve attached the video below!  Read and listen to the poems. When you’re done, write down which one was your favourite and why?

I can’t wait to see which poet Division 8 liked the most!

When you’re done, head over to Microsoft teams and get ready for your math ‘Paper Airplane Challenge.’

Poetry and Song!

Tuesday, April 21

Hello Division 8!

Canada, Flag, Canadian, Country, Emblem

I’m so excited to hear what you chose to do for music yesterday? Did you practice singing ‘O Canada’ or did you listen to ‘Hymn of Freedom?’ Please let me know!

Clef, Music, Love, Heart, Treble ClefDid you know that songs are simply poems that an artist decided to sing? Go ahead, pick your favourite song, listen to the lyrics – What do you notice? Rhyme, rhythm, feelings, repeating lines, maybe?! Or maybe you just feel something that you love in the song!

A poem/song can make you feel a certain way.  For example, anytime I hear the song ‘It’s a Beautiful World,’ by Louis Armstrong it makes me cry happy tears! It reminds me to look at the beauty around me already – my family, YOU, nature and it just warms my heart!

Your job today is to listen to one of your favourite songs. It doesn’t have to be in English! How does the song make you feel? Is there a part of the song that you love the most? Why? Please answer those questions in the reply section below!

For example: I love the song ‘It’s a Beautiful World,’ by Louis Armstrong because I also love seeing the beauty in the world around us. I especially love that he keeps repeating the words, ‘what a wonderful world.’

I’ve left the song that I love below! I look forward to reading your comments!

Love,

Ms. Binng

Wednesday, April 15th

Silhouette, Dancing, Jumping, PeopleDear Division 8,

Let’s talk about keeping ourselves healthy! What have you been doing to keep yourselves active and moving around? Playing video games doesn’t count ; )

Have you been going for walks? Did any of you try the family cardio videos or the Go Noodle videos? Each day it’s your job to keep yourselves moving for at least 30 minutes – I’ve added Cosmic Yoga and P.E. with Joe to the links.

Right, Arrow, Next, Arrow, Arrow, Arrow

Today’s job is to try one of them and leave me a comment…Did you sweat? What was the best part of the workout? What was the hardest part?

For example:

Almond Blossom, Cherry Blossom

My favourite activity to do each day is to go for a walk. I love seeing the blossoms blooming and feeling the fresh air on my face. The hardest part for me is this big hill when I come back home…I’m always huffing and puffing!

Another part of keeping healthy is COOKING! I know in your gratitude posters many of you mentioned all the yummy food you were cooking with your families! I’m interested in learning about all that yummy food!

What’s your favourite food? What are some of the ingredients you need to make your recipe? Please write it below!

Mine are healthier chocolate chip cookies!! Here are some of the things you need:

2/3 cup of oat flour                        1/2 tsp saltCookies, Chocolate Chip Cookies
