Happy National Paper Airplane Day!!!

Tuesday, May 26th

Dear Division 8,

Paper Planes, Paper Airplane, OrigamiCan you believe that there is day to celebrate the paper airplane!

It is believed that after the invention of paper in 500 BCE, paper airplanes started showing up around the world. Even Leonardo Da Vinci used parchment paper to design his models for manned aircraft. Orville and Wilbur Wright were known to study paper aircraft extensively before they made their first historic flight on December 17th, 1903.

National Paper Airplane Day is a day to recognize the accomplishments of our first aviators but even more so, it is a day to create the best paper airplane possible and send it skyward.

The practice of constructing paper planes is an example of origami, the Japanese art of paper folding. For more information about origami, check out this link:  https://kids.kiddle.co/Origami

Please watch the following video:

After watching the video, please answer the following questions in the comments section below: What did you learn about how planes fly? What new information did you learn?

YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE YOUR OWN PAPER AIRPLANE and sell it to a Toy Company!

Here are the details:

  1. You can make any model you wish – use the video for inspiration!
  2. Name your paper airplane.
  3. Decorate your plane, practice, and make changes until you feel great about your airplane!

DONE:

Airplane is completed and you are ready to SHARE (‘sell’ your plane) with Ms.Binng during our Friday class meeting! Keep that airplane safe until Friday!

Here’s your PE video for today! Remember to get active and do those moves…in the comments section write one word that describes how you were feeling during the Zumba dancing. For example: sweaty, hot, fun, happy

Head over to Microsoft Teams for your math for today!

Have fun!

You are the CHEF! Get your measuring cups, tablespoons and teaspoons ready…please share with me what you are cooking this weekend down below! Dancing, Party, Celebrate, DiscoFor example: The dancing video brought me lots of joy because it reminds me of all the dancing we did at school, especially the ‘butterfly’ move!  I also love to dance and I’m excited to see what our zoom ‘dance’ performance will look like today!

Create a STRUCTURE!

Thursday, May 14th

Dear Division 8,

Thank you for ALL your amazing videos and pictures! I can’t wait to put them together for you in a video! If you haven’t sent me your picture of JOY, please do so by the end of the week. If you haven’t done the PE toilet paper challenge please try and get that in to me too! By the way I just had to share Quinn’s amazing nature art and Kary’s genius hour project. Kary made a camera!

                                   Today’s challenge:

I want you to create a tower, bridge or building using materials you find at home!

You can use paper towels, tissue boxes, cardboard, books, chairs, pillows or anything else to come up with a way to build a tower, bridge or building. Be creative, have fun and don’t forget to use a growth mindset. I’ve included a picture of a tower built out of cardboard boxes.

When you’re done, what are the different ways you can measure your structure? Height, width or length? Take a few measurements.

Create a background for your structure. What is the setting for your structure? It could be mountains, a river, the moon or a city. Use your imagination. You could use cardboard paper, newspaper or flyers to create the background and then use markers and pencil crayons for colour.

Create a story about your structure and tell a family member.  Who are the characters? What could happen in this story?

What else does your structure inspire you to think about or do? Tell me about it below in the comments section. Don’t forget to take a picture and send it to Satpaul.Binng@burnabyschools.ca.

Happy building and creating today! When you’re all done, head over to Microsoft teams for your math video.

Love,

Ms. Binng
