Rube Goldberg Project – Day 2!

Wednesday, June 3rd

Hello friends!

I hope you had fun yesterday planning your project! I heard so many creative and different ideas on our zoom meeting yesterday.

Aiden sent in his machine and I thought I’d share it with you so you have an example of a project.  Aiden’s machine can push the ball past the line! Please watch the video:

Aiden’s Rube Goldberg Project

What can YOUR machine do?

Today I want you to start MAKING your project.  Remember this video for some inspiration but try and use your own creativity to come up with your own idea!  Please remember your machine needs to do something!

Meditate, Meditation, PeacefulNow take your time and remember it’s okay to get a little frustrated if something doesn’t work the first time – remember your brain is learning and firing up too! Use your strategies to calm yourself and come back to the project when you’re ready!

Once you’ve built your project, practice it a few times and then make a video of it. Please no longer then 10-15 seconds and send it to me at Satpaul.Binng@burnabyschools.ca.  You don’t need to finish this today.  This can be done by Friday if you need more time! I’ll put them all together so you can see each other’s creativity and projects!

Happy building friends!

Make sure you take a break to exercise today!

Love,

Ms. Binng

Rube Goldberg Project – Day 1!

Tuesday, June 2nd

Dear Division 8,

Today I have an exciting project for you…I’m going to introduce Rube Goldberg!

The video below was inspired by the engineer, cartoonist and creator Rube Goldberg.  He began working as an engineer and began to draw ridiculous inventions (things that can be used to do something else).  He never actually build the machines he drew, but his drawings sure did inspire many others to create away and they all were build to solve a simple problem or do a simple thing!

Here is your mission:

Get ready:

  1. Watch the video below to be inspired:

2. Next, come up with a simple problem that you’re trying to solve.  For example,

  • open a door
  • ring a bell
  • fire a nerf dart?
  • stir a spoon

3. Gather the supplies that you need.  See the list:

3.  Draw a picture of what your project might look like! If you need more inspiration check this out:

In the comments section below, please write what simple problem you are trying to solve in your project. We will talk more about this in our small group zoom meetings.

Once you figured out your simple problem, gathered your supplies and draw your picture of your project.  We are going to work on this project over TWO days! After you’ve drawn your picture – it’s break time!

Let’s dance!

Have fun and stay healthy and don’t forget to write the simple problem down in the comments section! When you’re done here, head over to Microsoft Teams for your Math challenge!

Love,

Ms. Binng

Staying Healthy!

Monday, June 1st

Hi Division 8,

How have you been staying healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic? Are you eating healthier foods? Are you exercising each day? Are you washing your hands when you come home or before eating?  As a few of you are coming back to school this week, it will be very important that we are all washing our hands properly.

I want you to watch this experiment!  You can also try it at home with your parents help of course!  It shows how washing your hands can keep germs away!

What did you learn in the video? Did you notice how the soap kept the germs away? So, an important step for all of us is to make sure we are washing our hands properly!

Please watch the following video that shows you how to properly wash your hands both at school and at home:

Take some time today and test out if you are washing your hands properly! Have an adult check out your hand-washing skills! Make sure you sing ‘Twinkle Twinkle little star’ or ‘Happy Birthday’ twice in your head!

I’ve also included a book for you to read. Click on the link to read the book today.  In the comments section below please write 1 to 3 things that you learned today!

Covid-19 Book

What did you learn today? Please write your comments below!

Have a wonderful PRO-D day today!

Ms. Binng

Temperate Rainforest Project!

Thursday, May

Dear Division 8,

We’ve been learning about our environment and the animals around us in the coastal temperate rainforest. Today we are going to focus on the layers of the rainforest. We learned about this yesterday in our habitat exploring and I’m going to leave you with a video so you can really see the different layers:

Your job today is to create or build the different layers of the rainforest using the things you have at home to help you. You can sculpt, draw or create a structure to show the forest floor, understory and canopy. Please make sure you include the animals and plants that live there! I leave it to your creativity to come up with a project that works for you!

Once you’ve done your hard work…I want you to take a break and dance! Let’s get that body moving!

In the comments section, please write down ONE word that describes how you were feeling when dancing today!

Have fun!

Love,

Ms. Binng
