New Video Monitor!!

To go along with our new computer we have a new video monitor and speakers which we connect to our new computer to show video clips.  We are still awaiting having our screen moved into place but for now we are showing the clips onto our bulletin board.

We gave this system an inaugural run on Friday afternoon by viewing part of the movie, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.  This treat is a follow-up to our having completed the oral reading of the book on Thursday.  Students have enjoyed hearing the book being read – and improving their vocabulary – and are now doing a comparison of the book and the movie.  We will finish up the movie in two more installments next week.

New Computers!!

We are very excited that our classroom has now received a new electrical socket and a new computer.  The computer is now connected to the internet and is up and running.  The students have been enjoying using it during Centres time.  We have also been enjoying our Thursday mornings in the computer lab in the library.

Jolly Postman Booklets

We have spent the last two weeks wrapping up our Fairy Tale unit.  We explored a variety of “Cinderella” stories and learned that almost every country / culture has its own version of this tale.

We then created our own fairy tale booklets in the style of The Jolly Postman – books which we began our unit with in December.  These are hanging on display on our bulletin board in the hallway.

Each booklet has three ‘envelope pages’ which contain: a Three Pigs jigsaw puzzle; a letter to the Three Bears from Goldilocks (apologizing for her behaviour); and a Jack and the Beanstalk activity.  The students all worked very hard with the many steps involved in putting together these booklets.  I think they look great.

Burnaby Heritage Village Field Trip

We had a great trip on Tuesday to Heritage Village.  It was a very Christmas-y day with a light snowfall sporadically throughout the trip.

Students enjoyed the many buildings from the 1920’s.  They learned a great deal about life in Burnaby during this era.

Some highlights included visits to: the blacksmith; the tram (the first ‘Skytrain’ only on ground level – the Interurban); the original Seaforth Schoolhouse (with the schoolmarm and her strict rules about manners and decorum); a log cabin; a Chinese apothecary; the Burnaby Post printing shop; a traditional house; the vintage Carousel; and the farmhouse.

 

 

Burnaby Heritage Village Field Trip

On Tuesday, December 10th we will be going to Burnaby Village Museum with Division 6 to take part in the Heritage Christmas programme.

We will leave Rosser at about 10:15 a.m. and return just before 3:00 p.m. for dismissal time.  Students will need to bring their lunches in a plastic bag as we are not taking backpacks or lunch bags.  The lunches need to be clearly labelled with your child’s name as all lunches will be collected and put in a box together in the lunchroom at the Village.

The notice went home earlier this week.  Please complete it and return it by Thursday, December 5th.

The trip is dependent on getting enough parent drivers.  Please let us know as soon as possible if you can help us out as we will need to cancel otherwise.  Students will also need to bring their own car seats on that day.

We look forward to a fun trip and an enjoyable outing.

 

Pattern Fun Time!

We have been developing our understanding of patterns over the past few weeks.  Students have learned what a ‘core’ is and how it repeats to create the pattern.  They have learned about the different attributes (colour, shape, direction) that make up the terms of a pattern.  Students have worked on showing the same pattern in different ways.  They have also learned how to find a mistake in a pattern and to fix it.

They have definitely had a lot of fun creating their own patterns – as you can see!!

Christmas Gift Basket Raffle

Well, Division 5 is ‘going to the dogs’!!

We would appreciate donations of new items to be donated to our division’s basket:

DIV 5. PET (DOG) BASKET: (dog toys, treats, doggy baggies, leash, collar, etc.)

This year the donated items need to come into the classroom by Tuesday, December 3rd.  There will be a box in the classroom for your child to put the items in.

Ticket sales will commence between December 9—19th every day from 12:00-12:15pm and 3:00-3:15 pm.

We would like to thank you in advance for all your generous donations.

 

Magnet Play

Students have been learning about magnets with our student teacher, Ms. Sue.  Today we had free time to explore around the classroom with our magnet wands and horseshoe magnets.

Students had time to find things that do – and those that don’t – attact to magnets.  They discovered that not all metals will attract to magnets but many metals do – even the bits inside pipe cleaners!

It was a lot of fun watching the children in ‘scientific mode’.  The discoveries and experimentation was inspiring.
