Subtraction Strategies: Decomposing Teen Numbers

This week we will be combining 2 things we have learned about: decomposing teen numbers and subtraction.

If you remember, decomposing means “breaking apart,” and we practiced how to decompose teen numbers into 10 and some more (18 is 10 and 8 / 15 is 10 and 5).

Today, we will use this strategy to solve subtraction equations. Find Ms. Ramirez’s video here:
Decomposing Teen Numbers to Solve Subtraction

NOTE: Some students will be able to do this mentally. Others may require to make the number first with manipulatives and then take away. In this case, have them make the number as 1 group of 10 and another group with the rest – i.e. 1= 1 group of 10 and a group of 3.
Both approaches are okay. Meet your child where they are.:)

Subtraction Strategies: Counting back mentally

We continue exploring subtraction as take away, and this week we will be using the “Count back” strategy.

You can watch Ms. Ramirez’ video here:

Counting Back Mentally Strategy video

**NOTE: Counting back mentally is a Grade 1 strategy. Kindergartens can continue using the previous strategies. However, if your Kindergarten child can easily count back, they can try this strategy.
For Grade 1 students, if your child has difficulties counting back with teen numbers (11-20), start with numbers 0-10.

Subtraction Strategies: Number Lines

This week’s strategy to solve Subtraction problems is using Number Lines

You can watch Ms. Ramirez’ video explaining the strategy here:

Subtraction using Number Lines

We used Number Lines to solve addition problems. What is different when using these Number Lines for subtraction? How do we move (towards the bigger numbers or towards the smaller ones)?
