Subtraction Strategies: Decomposing Teen Numbers

This week we will be combining 2 things we have learned about: decomposing teen numbers and subtraction.

If you remember, decomposing means “breaking apart,” and we practiced how to decompose teen numbers into 10 and some more (18 is 10 and 8 / 15 is 10 and 5).

Today, we will use this strategy to solve subtraction equations. Find Ms. Ramirez’s video here:

NOTE: Some students will be able to do this mentally. Others may require to make the number first with manipulatives and then take away. In this case, have them make the number as 1 group of 10 and another group with the rest – i.e. 1= 1 group of 10 and a group of 3.
Both approaches are okay. Meet your child where they are.:)
