Tuesday, May 12th

Good morning everyone! I hope you enjoyed the hot weather we had and were able to get outside with your family. Today we will have a Zoom chat at 1:00 with half the class. If you have signed up, please go to Teams and click on link.

Here are your morning announcements from Ms. Hall.

#1. Reading: If you are using MySciLearn, finish your first story of the week and answer the questions. If you are using RazKids, read 1 story and answer the questions, then move to Epic books and read 1-2 stories of your choice.

#2. Writing: You will be working on persuasive writing today. What is persuasive writing, you ask? Well, it means convincing someone of something. Today you will write to convince your mom or dad to get you a pet. Some of you wrote about wanting a pet and being told you couldn’t have one, so here is your chance! If you don’t want a pet, you are still going to work on your convincing skills. It could be something that’s not even possible to have (like a dinosaur or an elephant). Think of your favorite animal or an animal you think is really neat (like a Koala Bear). This is the first part of this lesson.

  • Listen to the story, I Wanna Iguana by Karen Kaufman Orloff
  • Complete a brainstorm of all the reasons you want this pet. In the center put the pet you want and in the outside circles put your reasons for wanting this pet. Here is an example of my writing:

#3. Math: Today you will be learning about measuring in centimetres. If you have a ruler, take a look at the numbers on it. A regular length ruler has the numbers 1-30 on it. Those numbers are centimetres. If you put your finger on the centimetre mark, you will notice that it is about the width of one finger.  Just like when we skip count using a calendar, we skip count when using a ruler. You don’t start at 0 and count that as one. Instead, you jump from 0 to 1 and count that as 1. In today’s work you will skip count the centimetres (you don’t need a ruler as the sheet has rulers on them).     Worksheets 1 &2

#4. Music: Join Mr. Smith at 2:30 for music. I will post his information in Teams in case parents have lost the information. This is optional.

#5. Art: Work on a poster for the teacher parade happening this Thursday afternoon. It could say something like: We Miss You, We Will All Be Okay, See You Soon, We Are In This Together, or anything of your choice! This is optional.

Monday, May 11th

Hello Class! We hope you had a great weekend and did something special for Mother’s Day. Happy birthday to Daniel!! Have a wonderful day filled with cake and presents!

Listen for the morning announcement from Ms. Foy, Mrs. Vaughan and Mrs. Mann’s pets!

#1. Reading: As usual, continue using either MySciLearn or RazKids. If you are using MySciLearn, read your first of 3 stories this week. If you are on RazKids, read for 20 minutes (2 books can usually be read in this time).

#2. Math:  Both grade 2’s and 3’s are moving onto measurement. Today everyone will complete the same sheets. You will need to know that width means across or left to right, while height means up and down or north to south. Of course, when you turn an object the width and height change. On the third sheet, you will be measuring a table or desk at home. You will measure it with your hand, cards,  lined paper and any paper you can find in a different size. See the picture at the top of the third sheet (pg. 156) and notice that you are measuring the longest part of the table. First with your hand in one direction, then with your hand in another direction. You will then use a card in one direction and then the card in another direction. Make sure you count as you go and then record your findings.          worksheets 1, 2, and 3

#3. Library: follow the library link above to hear Mrs. Field read. We aren’t able to put the code on the blog (as it is a public site), so if you forgot it, please email either myself or Mrs. Leroux and we can give it to you.

#4. P.E.: Go for a neighbourhood walk and complete this scavenger hunt as you go!

Friday, May 8th

Hello Division 8! It’s Friday!

Thursday, May 7th

Good morning Division 8!

Please enjoy today’s morning announcement presented by Mrs. Hall.

Zoom meeting today at 1:00 for our second group! Please be prepared with the password for the Thursday meeting that was emailed on Friday, May 1st by Mrs. Nicoll.  There were 8 students in our chat on Tuesday.  It was fabulous to be able to see and hear each other! 🙂

#1. Reading: If you are using MySciLearn for reading, continue reading your second story of the week  or start your third. Please complete it through to the end of the quiz. If you are using RazKids, read for 20 minutes. A reminder to please read books from the Level Up link.  Please do all three steps of the book: listen, read and then answer the questions.  I can see that some children are skipping some of the steps!!

#2 Writing:   Write me a letter!

I would like you to write me a letter and submit it to me in Teams under the Write a Letter Assignment. In the letter I would like you to tell me about how and what you are doing at home.  You can let your parents know that you are able to do the writing on your own.  I want to see your spelling and punctuation.  It is OK to talk about your ideas with your parents before you start, to get your thoughts organized, or to read it to them as you are working on it so that they can help you to add more details. Perhaps they will even remind you to check for COPS (Capitalization, Organization, Punctuation, Spelling) just like I would if we were in the classroom! You may write the letter on paper (with a pencil) or type it. Letter Writing Instructions  Due by Saturday, May 8th

#3 Math: Today both grade 2’s and 3’s are working on reading calendars.

  • Grade 2’s: Today you will be working on writing and spelling the days of the week and month of the year.  worksheet 1 and 2
  • Grade 3’s: You will be working on what the grade 2’s were doing yesterday. They learned that when we count days, we skip count. That means we jump from one day to the next. For example, today is Thursday. How many days is it until Sunday? We don’t count Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and say it’s 4 days. We do skip count starting on Thursday and count Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and say it’s in 3 days.     worksheet 1 and 2

#4 Physical Health: Please choose an activity or two to complete 30 minutes of activity today.

  • Go Noodle
  • PE with Joe : a new video
  • Cosmic Kids Yoga
  • go for a walk or bike ride outside
  • try or repeat Mrs. Nicoll’s workout from yesterday’s post

#5. Art: Work on Step 4 of the Mother’s Day art project.

Have a great day! Mrs. Leroux

Wednesday, May 6th

Good morning Division 8! I wanted to say happy belated birthday to Andy yesterday. We were able to sing Happy Birthday to him on our Zoom chat and saw the amazing decorations his mom and step-dad put up. I hope you had a great day!

Here are your morning announcements brought to you by Mrs. Field!

#1. Reading: If you are using MySciLearn for reading, begin reading your second story of the week. If you are using RazKids, read for 20 minutes. When you are in RazKids there are two links. One says Level Up and the other says Reading Room. Please use Level Up as all the books in there are at your reading level. The Reading Room has a variety of higher and lower levels, so it will have books that are too easy or too hard. Please answer the questions.

#2 Writing: Finish the journal entry from yesterday about something you wanted, but couldn’t have. When you are done, submit your work on Teams.

#3. Math: We are just finishing up our mini-unit on time and will move on to measurement next week. From now on, we will be leaving Fridays as a day to catch-up of Math from the week. A new lesson will not be posted this day. It will be a day to finish anything and to submit work in Teams.

  • Grade 2’s:  students will be reading calendars and answering questions. It is important for students to understand that when we read a calendar, we skip count. That means when we are counting up days, we make a jump from one day to the next and count that as 1. For example, it is Wednesday today. How many days is it until Friday? We don’t count Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and say it’s in 3 days. Instead, we jump to Thursday and jump to Friday and say it’s in 2 days.   worksheet 1 and 2
  • Grade 3’s: students will be writing the time to the hour and minute. On the second sheet there are two spaces for the hour. If the number is 9 or less, write 09:00.    worksheet 1 and 2

#4: Physical Education: Do an activity of your choice or try this workout:

  • warm up by jogging in place for 2 minutes
  • stretch your legs and arms

workout

  • 10 frog jumps (put your hands on the ground and explode up)
  • count to 20 and walk or run in place
  • 10 jumping jacks
  • count to 20 and walk or run in place
  • 10 tire runs (running in and out with high knees)
  • count to 20 and walk in place
  • 20 squats
  • count to 20 and walk in place
  • 10 air jacks (jumping jacks that you explode into the air to do)
  • count to 20 and walk in place
  • 10 running bum kicks (run kicking your bum)
  • count to 20 and walk in place
  • 10 in and out squat jumps ( jump in and out with squats in between each jump)
  • count to 20 and walk in place
  • 10 mule kicks ( get on your hand to the ground and buck your legs like a mule or horse. take a minute rest and water break
  • repeat this 2 more times

Great job, if you finished this!! If you didn’t finish, keep working out to get stronger and healthier. The more you do it, the better you get at it! You used your muscles and raised your heart rate. Fitness is important to being healthy!

#5. Art: Work on Step 3 of the Mother’s Day art project.

Tuesday, May 5th

Good morning everyone. We are looking forward to our chat at 1:00 today with half the class. Please click here to join the Zoom chat. It is important that students turn off their microphone when they are not talking. Everyone will have a turn to share, so please be patient.

Also, please note that the items listed 1, 2, 3 etc. are placed in order of importance. We realize that home learning is a challenge, so if the day is a bust (and some days are), please ensure that your child is reading for 20 minutes 5 days a week.

Enjoy the morning announcement with Mrs. Manners!

#1. Reading: If you are using MySciLearn, complete your first book of the week. If you are using RazKids, have your child read for 20 minutes. Please complete the comprehension questions.

#2. Writing: Going back to our unit on money, it is important to understand the difference between a want and need. Watch this video to understand the difference between the two. Now listen to the story  Those Shoes. While you are listening, think of a time you wanted something but your parents said no.

  • You will write a journal entry about a time you wanted something you couldn’t have. Let’s think of the questions to help include more details: What did you want? Where could you get it from? Why did you want it? Why were you told you couldn’t have it? How did it feel when you couldn’t have it? How did you react when you couldn’t have it? Was your reaction a big emotion or a calm emotion? Do you still want it? Could you save your money to buy it?
  • Grade 2’s please write at least 3 sentences and Grade 3’s write at least 5 sentences. Make sure the sentences follow each other and don’t start on a new line each time.

#3. Math:

  • Grade 2’s: students will be reading time to the hour. They will need to understand that when the big hand is on the 12 we write :00 and say o’clock. They will be reading the hour hand and writing the time. You don’t need a toy clock to answer the question at the bottom of worksheet 1.       worksheet 1 and 2
  • Grade 3’s: students will be reading the minute hand (the big hand). Please read the instructions at the top of the first worksheet with them. They will need to understand that the big hand counts by 5’s. They will be writing time to the minute, but won’t need to add the hour hand to the time.   worksheet 1 and 2

#4. Music: join Mr. Smith for his weekly Zoom music session at 2:30.

#5. Art: complete step 2 of the Mother’s Day Art at the top of the blog.

Monday, May 4th

May The Fourth Be With You!!

Happy Monday everyone. It’s hard to believe it’s May and it’s been a month and half since we have been together. We miss you and love being able to connect on our weekly chats. If you have not yet signed up for a time, please go to Sign Up Genius and choose a day.

Please enjoy today’s morning announcement presented by Poe and Leia from Starwars!

#1. Reading:

  • Choose either Raz Kids and read and answer questions for 1 book, or choose  MySciLearn and begin the first book. Be sure to complete the questions and record yourself reading.

#2. Math: Students will be reading time to the hour using the hour hand. In this lesson they will recognize that the hour hand moves between two numbers as the it gets closer to the next hour. Have your child use a ruler to follow the hour hand to the edge of the clock.

  • Grade 2’s: students will recognize that when the hour hand is closer to the lower number, we say “a little after ___ o’clock”. When the hour hand is closer to the higher number was say “a little before ____ o’clock”. worksheet 1 and 2
  • Grade 3’s: Please read the lesson at the top of the first worksheet. On the first worksheet,  the hour hand is pointing directly to the hour. On the second sheet the hour hand between two numbers. On the second worksheet, students will learn that when the hour hand travels between two numbers, we say the smaller number. Students don’t need to fill in the minute hand, only the hour hand.         worksheet 1 and 2

#3. Library: Listen to Mrs. Field’s Monday story time by clicking on her blog in the top link.

#4. Art: At the top on the blog there is link that says Mother’s Day Art. This is a project kids can do on their own or with the help of an adult other than mom! I realize that not all students in our class have a mom, but I know they are close to their grandmothers and I’m sure they would like it. If they don’t want to, that’s okay too! Today students will complete step 1.

#5. Physical Education: Get active for at least 30 minutes. Go for a walk, ride a bike, kick a ball at the park, play floor hockey outside, go on Go Noodle or do P.E. with Joe.

Friday, May 1st

Good Morning Division 8!  Happy Friday! Happy May!

Please enjoy today’s Morning Announcement presented by Mrs. Hall!

Assignments for today:

#1 Reading: Please choose a new book from Reading Assistant or Raz-Kids to listen to, read and answer the quiz questions.  Have you tried the new program yet? Do you have a favourite?

#2 Writing: Please continue to work on your Signs of Spring writing and drawing assignment today and then “hand it in” on our Teams page under Assignments – Signs of Spring. Remember to click “hand in” in the top right corner so that we know it is there!! If needed you can check back to yesterday’s post for a review of the instructions.

#3 Math:

  • Both grades will complete the same assignment today. Students will be focusing on telling time to the hour. Please read the information at the top of both sheets. Point out that the small hand on the clock is for telling time to the hour and the big hand is for telling time to the minute. On the first sheet, students will fill in the numbers on the clock. On the second sheet students will determine if the bold arrow is the minute or hour hand.       worksheets 1 and 2   (if you scroll down on the file you will see the second sheet)
  • If you want extension activities to keep your child busy or are finding printing the worksheets problematic https://ca.ixl.com/math/ has time activities for at your child’s grade level. #4 Physical Activity: Please choose an activity or two to complete 30 minutes of activity today.

  • Perhaps you didn’t have time last week to try this activity?  Maybe today’s the day?  If so, here it is again! Make up a routine of exercises to do, repeat the routine 3 times and then teach a family member! For example: 5 jumping jacks, 5 bunny hops, 5 jumps to the ceiling (squat down and touch the floor, then raise your hands and jump up as if you could touch the ceiling), 5 waddles like a duck.  If you come up with a fun routine please share it with us by writing it in the comments of today’s post!
  • Go Noodle

  • Cosmic Kids Yoga
  • go for a walk or bike ride outside

Bye for now! Have a wonderful weekend! Mrs. Leroux

Thursday, April 30th

Hello Division 8!

Please enjoy today’s Morning Announcement presented by Ms. Foy and Mrs. Vaughan!

I have really enjoyed reading your “I am unique” paragraphs.  After I read your writing,  I gave you some feedback that included a personal message and some editing or corrections. You should have received a pop up message on Teams to tell you that my feedback was ready to view. Please make sure you read my feedback to help you make improvements in your writing for next time.

When handing in assignments on Teams, please click “hand in” in the top right corner so that we know it is there!!

Assignments for today:

#1 Reading: Please choose a book from Reading Assistant or Raz-Kids to listen to, read and answer the quiz questions.

#2 Writing:  Please watch and listen to the non-fiction book How Do You Know It’s Spring?.  Then using the attached paper, Signs of Spring, or a piece of paper from home, please complete the following assignment.  There are many signs of Spring in the outside world around you and in the book you have just viewed. Choose 4 things to complete the phrase, Spring is…..; then choose one thing that Spring is not.  I challenge you to make me laugh about what Spring is not! 🙂   Finally, I would like you to draw a picture of a Spring sceme in the box. Please work on this assignment over today and tomorrow and then “hand it in” to our Teams page under Assignments – Signs of Spring.

#3 Math:

  • Grade 2’s: students will focus on understanding seconds and reading the numbers on an analogue clock. You will need to get a timer that counts seconds. I recommend the timer on your phone. If you have an iPhone, use the stopwatch and swipe left to have an analogue clock come up.    On the second sheet, they are simply writing the numbers on an analogue clock. worksheet 1       worksheet 2
  • Grade 3’s: students will focus on understanding the connection between seconds, minutes, hours, weeks, years, decades, and centuries. Students will need to do some math to solve these problems. They can use a scrap piece of paper or the back of their sheet to solve these problems. If you find this is taking a long time to complete, have your child complete only the first sheet.

worksheet 1     answer sheet 1     worksheet 2     answer sheet 2

#4 Physical Activity: Please choose an activity or two to complete 30 minutes of activity.

  • Go Noodle
  • PE with Joe : a new video
  • Cosmic Kids Yoga
  • go for a walk or bike ride outside

Bye for now! Mrs. Leroux

Wednesday, April 29th

Good morning class!! A lot of you have been handing your work in through Teams, which is awesome! I will put an assignment on Teams to hand in 4 math sheets of your choice this week.

Here are your morning announcements from Mrs. Chin, Mrs. Mann, and Mrs. Kumar!

#1. Reading: First, please finish your Reading Program book  from yesterday. Once it is complete you will have the option to read a second story or to try a story from a different program called Raz-Kids. You will find the website link under the Online Reading Program tab at the top of this page.  Your username and password are the same for both reading programs.   When you have chosen a book to read, please follow the same three steps: listen to it, read it, answer the quiz.  Happy Reading!

#2. Math: We are starting to learn about concepts of time. Today we will start with how long does it take to do things.

  • First play a game: You will need to get some Lego (hopefully everyone has some) and a sand-timer (from a board game). Flip the sand-timer and see how many pieces of Lego you can put together in a minute. Take a break and see if you can put beat your previous number. You could also play against someone and see who can put the Lego together the fastest.
  • Grade 2’s: The second worksheet will require a partner. You could ask any family member to join you in doing the activities. You will also need to get a sand-timer for the 2nd sheet.

worksheet 1      worksheet 2

#3. Physical Education: Find an activity to do for 30 minutes. You could go for a walk, bike ride, follow Go Noodle (my kids did this for about an hour yesterday), or P.E. with Joe.
