November 2014 – Ms Gourlay's Class

Month: November 2014

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERADivision 10 finally finished our pumpkin artwork.  First, we drew our pumpkin on black paper.  Next, we used glue to make the outline.  After the glue had dried, we coloured the pumpkin with oil pastels.  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

untitledDivision !0 read a book called Rotten Pumpkin: A Rotten Tale in 15 Voices by David Schwartz and Dwight Kuhn.  This is possible the most disgusting book ever . . . and we loved it.   It is the story of what happens to a pumpkin once it starts to rot.  We learned a lot about how organisms like fungi, bacteria, molds and insects help to decompose pumpkins and recycle them back into the earth.  The pictures are fantastic and really gross.

Then we started looking at Jack the class pumpkin with our magnifying glasses.  We tried to identify some of the things that we saw in the book.  Here we are at work. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Counting Seeds

Our class pumpkin Jack also helped us do some counting.  We really wanted to know how many seeds were inside Jack.  We decided that the easiest way to count a large number of seeds was to put them in groups of 10.  Here we are counting the seeds.

We were amazed to find that our tiny pumpkin Jack contained 338 seeds.  We learned the size of a pumpkin is not indicative of the number of seeds that are inside.  We know that there are more seeds in darker orange pumpkins and pumpkins that have a lot of lines on the outside.
