Literacy Activities
| Read an article, book, advertisement, and identify the main idea. How do you know this is the main idea? (Be careful not to confuse a fact or detail with the bigger main idea of the piece). |
| Create a word bank of 5-7 words on a student selected topic (e.g. school – recess, math, teacher, homework, friends). Create three sentences using some of these words. Try to have one sentence that ends in a period(.), one that ends in a question mark (?), and one that ends in an exclamation mark (!). |
| Call, Facetime, or video chat with a family member or friend. When you are done, tell someone in your house about three things you talked about. |
| Choose your favourite season and write a list of reasons for your choice. Write two descriptive sentences to read to someone and have them guess your season. |

| April showers bring May flowers! How many days are in the month of May? How many weeks is that? Do all months have the same number of weeks? Use a calendar to investigate. |
| Cara starts counting at 15. She increases by 5 each time. Will Cara reach the number 72? |
| Find 5 different sized cans in your kitchen cupboard. Hold one in each hand at a time. Compare their weights. Can you order the cans from least amount of weight (lightest) to the most amount of weight (heaviest)? |
| How Many? Olivia’s dog had 10 puppies. Olivia bought 2 beds for the puppies to share. At night, Olivia checked on the puppies while they were sleeping. How many puppies could Olivia have seen on each bed? Show all the ways the 10 puppies could share 2 beds. Is there a way that they can have the same amount? |
| Sorting Time! Choose a set of toys or objects in your home. Can you sort them using 2 attributes? (Sort by size and shape, or by colour and shape etc.) |
DPA/ Outdoor Learning
| Indoor Bowling: This is a great way to reuse water bottles! Line six to ten water bottles up at the end of your hall or living room. Place a line of masking tape at the starting line. Grab a medium-sized indoor ball and start bowling! |
| Backyard Bird Watching: Spot any birds outside and then try to identify them online. |
| Egg Drop: Use your blue bin recycling materials to build a container for an egg that protects it from breaking. With help from a parent, test it out by dropping it from a high location. |
| Play a game of Charades by acting out different animals. Try to guess your partner’s animal as quickly as you can. Building Challenge: Using items found outside or around your house, build a tall structure. How tall and stable can you make your structure? Hide and Go Seek: Hide a ‘treasure’ of your choosing in the house or backyard. Write clues (I.e. the object is small, the object is under something soft, etc.) that will guide your partner to the ‘treasure.’ Give them one clue at a time. |
