“No One Owns the Colours”

Many families have wonders about what the SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) curriculum looks like in Kindergarten. I wanted to share an example of how I weave this curriculum into our everyday explorations, through a focus on kindness, inclusion, and embracing the joy that diversity brings to our classroom community.

This afternoon we joined Division 25 to begin to explore the idea that “pink is for girls and blue is for boys”. The students were invited to share their connections, wonders and feelings about this common perception of colour and gender. And then they were challenged to think another way. Can colours be “owned” by a gender? Can we “own” colours?

We dug deeper into this wonder as we read a beautiful story called, “No One Owns the Colours” written by Gianna Davy. I invite you to watch the story with your child by clicking on the link below:

No One Owns the Colours

Our discussion ended with everyone agreeing that nobody can own a colour, and we can all appreciate colours in our own unique ways! To express and celebrate our collective understanding that all colours are for everyone, we created a collaborative art piece that weaves together all of the colours that bring us joy!

Please enjoy a few photos from this experience!

What colours bring you joy?

Love,

Ms. Allanson
