Spuds in Tubs!

Dear families,

Did you know we planted twelve potato seeds before Spring Break? We are very excited to be growing our own food!

We did a lot of math thinking together to figure out how many potato seeds would go into each tub. Then, we added soil to our tubs, mixed in some plant food, and planted our seeds!

After the break, the class was excited to see the changes and wanted to share their thoughts with you:

What do you notice?
Victor
: “The potatoes is growing so small and now so long.”
Chloe: “I notice that one plant has a little purple at the bottom.”
Carrie: “There’s a green thing on the top and the leaf is cracking open.”
Rehaan: “I see there is two tall ones the same size. One is straight and one is bended.”
Ethan: “I notice the soil is white.”
Michael: “I notice that a root is laying down.”
Chala: “Potato.”
Mudabir: “This one has four.”
Chloe: “I see some long ones and more short ones.”
Rehaan: “The smaller one looks like a cactus.”
Dominika: “Potato is growing. And one stem is not growing.”
Amza: “Potato fall off.”
Aileen: “I see a longer stem.”
Michael: “It looks like bamboo.”

What do you wonder?
Aurele
: “I wonder why we didn’t see the little green plants.”
Ethan: “I think the soil is white because it has no water.”
Carrie: “The whiteness, the soil, I think that’s what’s bending the plant. Maybe it’s dying.”
Amir: “Why is this one is small down here?”
Rehaan: “I wonder how the silverfish got into the plant.”
Carrie: “I think the silverfish got into the plant from the bottom.”
Aurele: “I wonder why the little plants don’t have flowers.”
Rehaan: “I wonder why this plant bended?”
Ian: “Why some potatoes like that Y?”
Aurele: “I wonder why the plants are a little yellow.”

The children noticed that the plants did not get sunlight or water during the break. Now that we are back at school, the blinds are open and the plants are getting what they need. As the plants grow, we will keep adding and “hilling” the soil and checking when it’s time to water the plants. Our potato plants are growing quickly and we look forward to sharing more of our observations with you!
