Puddle Science!

Did you know that when we go for our outside explorations, we are being scientists? Over the last few weeks the rain has brought us lots and lots of puddles to play in and explore! Two weeks ago, we went looking for a big puddle to take a closer look…We were excited to see the circles the rain drops were making in the water! We noticed some things in the puddle and we wondered what might sink or float? We collected some leaves, sticks, rocks, and some plastic we found on the field and tested them out!

We wanted to continue our exploration so we brought the things we found back to our class to keep testing if they would sink or float.

We also added some materials from our classroom to test out metal, paper, and plastic too! We practiced making predictions and enjoyed sharing our theories and observations!

You can try testing out if materials sink or float at home too! Have fun experimenting!

  1. What a great idea for budding scientists who love nature! Explaining Archimedes’ law can be tricky, especially when kids don’t quite get what volume means. I bet they had a blast outside, playing in puddles. Let’s just hope none of them tried to copy Peppa Pig’s family by Jumping up and down in muddy puddles!
