Language Arts

Term 3

Big Ideas:

  • Curiosity and wonder lead us to new discoveries about ourselves and the world around us.
  • Stories and other texts can be shared through pictures and words.

What learning may look like:

  • Continuing to read “just right” texts: Reading with fluency, phrasing and attention to punctuation
  • Practicing readings strategies like; checking for sight words, sounding out letters, chunking (larger words), asking “Does it look/sound right or make sense?”, looking at picture clues
  • Creating stories through video (orally) with toys/loose parts/piece of nature, or creating a story book
  • Continuing to practice letter formation
  • Practicing sentence structure and conventions (periods, capitals)
  • Practicing spelling through the Words Their Way programme

Term 2

Big Ideas:

  • Stories and other texts can be shared through pictures and words
  • Through listening and speaking, we connect with others and share our world.

We will continue working on letter formation, phonemic and phonological awareness, and meta cognitive strategies (thinking and talking about learning to develop awareness of  self as a reader and as a writer)

What it will look like:

  • Learning to read “just right” texts
  • Printing letters
  • Working on spelling (consistently identifying initial and final sounds, working on short and later long vowel sounds)
  • Working on rhyming and breaking down words into syllables and sounds
  • Working on simple sentence structure and punctuation
  • Learning Sight Words to help kids be stronger readers
  • Story workshop where kids will create stories using loose parts and tell their stories orally

Natural materials and loose parts with grass mats

In Term 2 we will also use the Words Their Way spelling programme. On Mondays students will receive a spelling list page. Students will practice their weekly list at school and have a spelling test on Fridays. On short weeks (if there is a Pro-D or a holliday) we will use the same spelling page for two weeks and the spelling test will be on Thursday or Friday of the second week.

Please also help your child learn their spelling words at home. 🙂

Ideas for word sorts at home:

  • Speed Sort – sort the words as fast as you can
  • Mix and Fix – one partner turns around and the other one sorts the words with a few mistakes. The first partner then tries to find the mistakes and fix the sort.
