Resumé
Hello and welcome to a new school year 2024-2025. My name is Mrs. Joanne Smith and I will be your grade 6 & 7 teacher. Grades six and seven are my absolutely favourite grades and the only ones I’ve chosen to teach throughout my teaching career. This is my 23rd year as a teacher at Douglas Road. Before landing my job at Douglas Road, I accrued 339 TOC days, and spent 3 years doing head teacher relief in a grade 6/7 classroom at Chaffey-Burke.
I graduated from the University of Ottawa with a Certificate in Business, as well as a Bachelor’s degree with a double concentration in Psychology and Sociology. I completed my teacher training at SFU in 1998, immediately followed by a post baccalaureate diploma in education. I completed my Master’s degree at SFU in curriculum instruction and design.
Social psychology is of great interest to me, and so I eagerly started a Peer Mediation program in my first year here, which has grown strong to a class set of Peer Mediators (who are grades 6 and 7 students). I also launched a grade 7 Me To We Committee in 2009 to support local and global causes of inequality. I also enjoy coaching students for the annual Grade 7 Public Speaking Competition.
I look forward to growing and learning together!
