HOW TO TALK TO KIDS ABOUT PORNOGRAPHY
Just as it’s our responsibility to have the “sex talk” with our children, in this day and age, having the “pornography talk” must be a given for parents everywhere.
Discussing the multitude of sexually provocative images and movies that are readily available on the internet is, to say the least, difficult. Nevertheless, I’d estimate that not a week goes by that I don’t hear about someone who is understandably worried about his or her child’s interest in, or apparent exploration of, internet pornography. This has become a central issue in child development. — Steven Scholzman, MD

THE CONCEPT OF BEAUTY
LGBTTQ+
LGBTTQ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Two-Spirit, and Queer or Questioning. The plus (+) ensures that further identities are included and indicates that nobody is left out.
About 1 in every 10 people is LGBTTQ+.
We know that what people watch on TV or see on the internet, as well as influences of family and friends shape how they view and treat the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people around them. And we have a responsibility to make sure those images foster awareness, understanding, and respect.
If a student uses an LGBTQ term, like “gay”, in a derogatory way, ask them if they know what it means. If they don’t, give a short definition and explain that it is offensive to use such terms when the intention is to be hurtful and mean to someone. Let them know they should not use it in that way!
B.C. Human Rights Code amendments
The Human Rights Code now includes “gender identity or expression” among the protected grounds covered by the Code.
SOGI-inclusive education is about students having conversations about the SOGI diversity in society and the importance of treating everyone with dignity and respect.
