We Walk for Water

Every day girls must walk hours to collect clean water.
We’re the generation who can change this.

Twenty awesome grade 7 students in Me to We walked for water on Thursday, May 24th, 2018 during their lunchtime.  Each of them committed to collecting $25 in pledges.  Twenty-five dollars gives one person water for life.

    1. I am proud of this because…

I am proud of walking for water because there are lots of females in Sierra Leone who have to take very long trips just to get a bucket of dirty water from the rivers. I am proud to say that I walked for water because it was an experience that I will never forget, females everyday in Sierra Leone have to walk long trips just to get dirty water and they can’t get an education because of that!

    2. Something new that I learned and understand better…

Something new that I learnt and understood better was that females have to go through the dreadful pain everyday. Everyday their hands, fingers, backs, and feet will ache and they also don’t get any education because of this situation.

    3. My biggest challenge was…

My biggest challenge was that almost every minute or so, I would have to stop and put my two milk jugs on the ground to give my aching fingers a rest for a few seconds. I would then have to continue walking around the trail until I would have to stop again for a rest because it was heavy.

    4. I still have questions and uncertainties about…

I still have questions about why females have to still walk to get dirty water.
People from different countries should come to Sierra Leone and build a water dispenser so that the girls will not have to walk very far and also get an EDUCATION!

  • I am proud of this because: i am part of metowe and i just experienced what it feels like to carry ware for a distance, thanks to We walk for water

Some thing I learned is: that it is much harder than it seems in videos

My biggest challenge was: carrying the two buckets of water for a few laps

  • Hi this is Aylah.

    1. I am proud of this because I’ve always felt sympathy but never known what it’s like, and after this I can understand just a little bit. I will never fully understand how it feels to miss school for it, or walk 10km, but I’m proud that I tried my best.

    2. Something new that I learned and understand better is that they walk a lot farther than you think, and in very different climates. I understand how hard it is on your body, and your mind. How distracting it is and time consuming.

    3. My biggest challenge was that it rubbed against my knuckles making the skin rub off, and it hurt my shoulders. It was also annoying when my hair kept going in my face, and rubbing on my neck making me hot and sweaty. It was difficult to keep going at times when it was getting heavier as I went.

    4. I still have questions and uncertainties about why it’s a majority of women collecting water, and missing school instead of both genders. Sexism is a BIG PROBLEM. I also don’t understand why big celebrities like Bill Gates don’t help people more.

  • Hi this is zeinab from division 1, I am proud of this campaign because it is helping other people around the world that have rough lives and that also don’t get clean water to drink, take showers with and to clean their clothes. I am also proud that we can help 13 people get clean water for life.

Something that I understand better now is the pain that they go though everyday to collect clean water. When we where walking around the school my hands started to hurt and the jugs that I was holding started to slip but luckily it didn’t fall and my neck started hurting as well and it still hurts.

  • hi this is Yaaska

I am proud of this because i got to experience what people in Africa and other countries that are under developed

Something new i learned is that carrying water is harder than you think and the videos make it look easy

  • 1.I am proud of this because…
I was able to experience the struggles that a lot of young females have to go though each day. Even though I did it on a smaller scale I am proud of putting the effort to understand the struggles that they go through.

2.Something new that I learned and understand better…
Something that I learned or understood better is the struggle that females have to go through each day. Before I was going to walk I thought that it would be super easy and I would get a bunch of laps, but the moment I started I knew that I wouldn’t get as much laps that I thought I would do. The fact that people do everyday for so many hours is amazing.

    3.My biggest challenge was…
I think my biggest challenge was to keep myself and never stop, the way I would keep myself motivated to do this was to remember that what I’m doing could make a big difference.

4.I still have questions and uncertainties about…
Why other countries aren’t going to Sierra Leone to help the country and build clean water taps and wells so the people who wake up so early can get an education.

  • 1. I am proud of this because…

I am proud of walking for water because I now know the everyday struggles of young women in countries like Sierra Leone. I am extremely pleased to say that I have participated in the We Walk For Water event.

    2. Something new that I learned and understand better…

Something new that I learned and understand better is the fact that millions of women across the world struggle everyday trying to get water for them self and for their villages.

    3. My biggest challenge was…

My biggest challenge was trying to keep my self motivated, to keep myself moving. But just the thought of the dying people in third world countries (like Sierra Leone) kept me moving and pushing through the struggle of my tiny hands trying to grip on to the milk jug handle.

    4. I still have questions and uncertainties about…

I still have questions about how the women in Sierra Leone kept themselves going. What persuaded them to keep pushing and striving towards their goal; water.
